i just installed the 6AL. it went in easy. took longer to mount it than to wire it. got the wireing harness with it. its nice to have the revlimiter and the add-ons u can get for it. also if ur ignition isn't up to the task of lighting up ur engine, then its a good investment.

i also have the 6AL. i think its a really nice mod to do, but dont expect a night and day difference. it does help though. the rev limiter is a great feature.

i bought but didnt use the wiring harness. i didnt like the way that it connected everything together (it used the "slide-on" connectors or whatever). i hard wired it all in. it was a LOT more time consuming that way though. it wasn't bad to wire up...it gives you a chance to get to know your wiring harness a lot better

the harness is very easy though.

In having a problem with my 6AL if I floor it the tach starts to tweak out and drop to zero. The guys at MSD said I needed to bypass a filter(electrolytic capacitor ) that is in between the distibutor and tach. They coundn't tell me where it was. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

While I originally bought the harness for mine, it is now hardwired to the car. While I agree with the wiring/knowledge gained aspect there is an evil downfall to this method.... setting the timing.
The MSD box sparks more than once under a preset RPM limit (thus the MSD name). When you go to time the car in the normal fashion, the MSD box keeps on with it's routine making it more difficult than normal to get an accurate timing reading. I have been devising a setup to bypass the MSD box via some form of switch instead of having to have harness plugs or chopping wires.
The other drawback to hardwiring over the plug-n-play is, if the box ever fails for any reason it feels, you're screwed. I was in this situation when I originally had the harness adaptor. The car stumbled and died and had the MSD box been hardwired, I'd have been stranded. I was able to revert to stock setup in a minute and was on my way. This fond memory is what spawned my switch idea. Sorry for rambling on..

Sorry fellas, I know this is an old thread but I did a search on msd wiring harness and found it. I was wondering what coil you guys used and what harness part number you used. I went to hook up my msd box with my Blaster GM coil (8226) and the harness that I bought would not fit the coil. The coil has 4 pins and the harness I had only had 2 pins. I told summit exactly what I had and that is what they gave me. Any help would be appreciated. I want to be able to do the ole quick switcheroo too if need be. Thanks.

I'd like to help but I have an HEI so i didn't need the harness that they sold me. The coil is built onto the cap.

you only need those two pins, the coil terminals are connected internal to the coil

MSD

Well, I went on leave in april-may and found that all the stuff I ordered online while in Fallujah, Iraq for 8 months had built up in my parents garage where I was storing my 87 LT.
list of stuff:
MSD super HEI kit. with 6AL and blaster coil.
Nordskog cluster.
New 4th gen leather seats.

I was still waiting on my carpet (which didn't arrive til late june)

I really didn't wanna do the seats without the carpet but I was 3 days from when I had to take off to drive back to the base and didn't wanna freight the seats back there.
I made it a 1day project that turned into a grueling 2 weeks of troubleshooting.
the first week:
tore out the instrument cluster.
my friend came over to see what I was doing to the poor car and he offered to get started on the MSD. I told him okay.

I made a mistake and my being in Iraq when I ordered the MSD didn't help in my selection. I didn't have an HEI.
so I went out and bought one... last time I buy anything that isn't top of the line that deals with the main performance of the engine.
my dad got home and tried to help and ended up getting a full blast from the MSD when his finger got too close to the wire coming off the coil... think he got a good chunk of new grey hairs from that.
I eventually bolted the MSD to the battery box cause I couldn't find anywhere else that it fit. and bolted the coil in an awkward spot too.

for the next 3 days I tried to figure out why my timing was all messed up... I eventually dropped the HEI back in a different position and every clicked into place and worked.... I decided it worked and didn't wanna try to time it again.

I'd love to go into detail about how I had to SWAG most of the wiring but I can't remember much after Iraq.... I bumped my head so much I'm close to having that syndrome that Drew Barrymore had in that 50 dates movie. I can't remember much after 7-10 seconds unless if it's something technical that happened.... I don't know how it got from beingn april to august.

anyways, so eventually I bought the MSD super conductor wires to compliment my new high ignition system along with some of those expesive bosch platinum +4 plugs. (I had lots of money from Iraq) runs great but I messed up my choke somewhere and now it's stuck.. I drove 3000 miles and I'm finally settling on getting a new carb... I'm getting 12mpg and I'm quite sure it's washing the walls. it diesels on anything but premium.

Then what two pins does the harness plug into on the coil? Is this something I can just plug in and see if it works? And, do I just leave the other two pins uncovered? Sure would like to see a pic of someone's setup to see how they did this.

esmartuek: How's it going neighbor? I live on Pope AFB. What color is your car? Have you been driving it around on base?

it's primer black... I'm in the LONG process of redoing the entire body. I've got the huge MSD stickers on my back bumper and a shiny Unreal Tournament emblem there too. I also have a Sex Wax sticker in my rear window.

One big indicator is that I have a wienershnitzel hotdog dude on my antenna (so I can find my car in a parking lot)

anyways, I just fixed my wiring problem with my stereo cause I had to take out the whole console this weekend when I redid my carpet. my interior is one step closer to looking new.

Is it just me or does it seem like everyone is using the super conductors?

I had to completely redo my distributer anyways cause it corroded out and the connectors corroded also... I ended up doing some makeshift connections and now my check engine light will not come off... anyone know which wires I need to play with in order fix this?

it sure would be nice to not have to tear apart my dash and remove the bulb just to pass the safety check.

PERFECT!! Thanks Dave Y. I have been wondering about that. Now the headache comes with the spark plugs (getting them in and out and gapping them right) Thanks again Dave I was hoping someone had a setup like that.

esmarteuk: Yes, the superconductor wires are nice, I am glad I bought them.
