Help stop this infernal dinging!!!

Can somebody please tell me why my 'fasten seatbelt' light comes on continuously with the ding ding dinging sound...it will ding for a while, then be quiet, then ding some more, then quiet...it's driving me insane! I can even hear it over my stereo! I hear it in my sleep!!! aaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhh!

No, really, I was wondering if there is something in the steering column (mine's tilt and loose), or is it in the seatbelt itself (my red button on the driver's side is broken in the down position)....

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I feel your pain, man. I used to drive a vehicle that did that. It's enough to "drive" you insane, no pun intended. I have never dealt with this problem, but my guess would be your broken seatbelt is the culprit. I would suggest either get a new seatbelt or look up the wiring diagram and rip that stupid beeper outta there. I'm gonna look this up and reply with a little more knowledge.

its not the seatbelt itself since its not like newer cars that when you plug in your belt the light goes away. our lights are just supposed to come on for a few seconds and then go away. Some things that could cause the dinging to not stop are as mentioned the buzzer thing shorting out OR also make sure that your dash (the whole gauge cluster) is secured in its spot properly. When i was replacing my SES light i didn't pop the dash back in the whole way and the dinging never stopped until i readjusted the dash. i guess the wiring in the back never made a solid connection and made a constant ground for the buzzer to continuously go off. And also to access the buzzer its in the convenience panel, underneath the hush panel in the right hand side, just take that one bolt off and the whole little tray drops right down.

The dinging could be seatbelt related, when you put on your seatbelt the buzzer/chime stops (if you do it before the timer runs out). There is a switch hooked to the reel on the seatbelt, the belt has to be pulled out a specified distance for the switch to activate that and the timer for the buzzer could be bad.
The only thing is, that switch doesn't affect the light (at least not on my 85 camaro) but it is possible that newer F bodies have the light wired to that switch too.

might try looking at the latching part of the belt ie.. the piece next to the seat. when the seat belt is latched it grounds the switch located in the latch assembly. check to see if there is a wire coming from the base of the latch depending on your set up it could be chaved and making contact else where. As far as your loose tilt it is a common problem and cheap to fix. the 3 torx head bolt located inside your steering column have worked themselves loose and should be tightened up with a little loc tight. Ive fixed many myself and is about a hours worth of work if you feel light tearing your steering column apart. the three torx bolts are located at the pivoit point of the column just past your cancel cam.

The latch on the seatbelt IS indeed broken...the release button is frozen in the down position....which may have cause some problems...I'll check it out closer tomorrow.

I had my column tightened years back while the rack was being replaced, looks like I'll have to do it myself this time...I just need to get the lockplate removal tool...it makes things sooooo much easier. I know which 3 torx bolts you are talking about....I'll put that on next weekend's "to do" list.

Thanks for all the input, I'll post back and let you know when that dinging quits and why!!
