Brights lever wont "click" Cant use brights!
This has been a problem for a while now, but now I'm sick of not having brights!
When I pull the lever for the brights, it wont click. I've heard something about a casing or something that has to be replaced. Anybody know what all that's about?

anybody got a part #?
This really doesn't sound like the same problem my car has though. This guy's lever clicks and the lights work for a few minutes. Mine doesn't click over. I'm thinking something is busted closer to the steering wheel

There's a headlight switch under the column, below the attatchment point to the dash. you'll have to remove the covers to see it. the turn signal/dimmer switch has a rod running down the column, that pushes the switch . The switch is what "clicks".
I'm guessing the switch has moved, and the rpd can't push it enough to actuate it, or the rod has come out of the "pocket" in the switch. Find the switch, loosen the 2 screws that hold it, slide it up till the dimmer switch actuates it, tighten the screws.

if you can tilt the wheel up and the brights work, or atleast almost do, then you have the same problem I had. The lever itself is not the problem, its the switch on the top of the steering column. You'll have to drop the steering column down so that you can access the top of it, then it is a simple matter of loosening the hold down screws and moving the switch towards the steering wheel. Then, retighten the screws, and enjoy bright lights again.

Yeah, that's what it was doing. For a long time I could tilt the wheel all the way up and it would work, but not any more.
So am I removing the cover on the column between the steering wheel and the guages, or am I removing the cover down by my knees? Dont want to remove the wrong thing and feel stupid

drop the lower dash cover, the one by your knees, should only be like 4 or 5 screws. then take off the two nuts on each side of the column that holds the mounting bracket up to the frame. watch your head cause it will swing down after that you are looking for a little switch that looks like a push button (should be about 1" around, 2" long), should be a thin metal rod going to it, it will be on the top left side of the steering column, should only have a couple wires goin to it, there is another switch assembly to the right of it with about 6 or 8 wires going to it, try not to mess with it, that is your ignition switch. just loosen the 1 or 2 screws that hold the bright switch and adjust it...you can push the button with your finger just to make sure its clicking on and off.

you need to take the nut off on each side of steering column bracket, like 13mm, so you can lower the steering column and access the switch on top of it.

Yeah but I did that. I lowered the steering column, it was hanging halfway to the floor, almost in the seat. The problem is that I cant find the screws or whatever they are that you loosen in order to move the swith closer to the rod. If I dont get it soon I'm giving up until next week or something........

OK, here's the column, and the switch. The lower rod is the one you want.
The switch, and the screws. The screws hold the other switch on also, but only the dimmer switch will slide.

Thanks, a picture's worth a thousand words.
So I'm going to have to loosen the back one and take out the front one, huh?
I'll go back out and try it again..........

hmm now that I am awake...it wouldnt be a bad idea to use a piece of tape to hold the actuator rod in place, you dont want it to fall down out of the column, kind of a pain to put back in

oooooh boy, well if the rod came loose at the top where it hooks to the lever, not much to do but pull the steering wheel, the lockplate, the horn ring, and the turn signal cam assembly out so you can see where the turn signal arm actuates the rod, IIRC it has a little hook on one end that seats up in the end of the arm.just grab hold of it and put it back where it belongs (I swear so much of the delicate crap in the column is held together with nothing but wishful thinking and dynamic tension)...do a search for a post by vader about steering columns, or just PM him, he has a good diagram of the steering column and all its parts.
