Gas gage wrong!

Maybe the past 6 mos or so I've noticed that my gas gage is giving incorrect readings when it comes down to the last few gallons. By setting the trip OD I know that I have lets say 50 more miles before empty but the gage would read rock bottom, pull over now EMPTY. Look again in 10 minutes and it reads 1/4 tank! Even when full it rarely gives a correct reading, always fluctuating greatly. I replaced the gage but same result. Is there a fix or is this just the way it is?

My old gauge and my new one both read way over full when the tank is full. When it gets to about half full... the gauge suddenly drops to 1/2 and then reads normally until E. I think it is my sender... you may have crud on your wires. They work on resistance.

Do you stop quickly? I have a 1988 Firebird 305 and when I stop at a light the gas gage will drop by a quarter to an eigth depending upon the stopping speed. Try stopping slowly and taking corners slowly. If the problem still occures I don't know what to tell you. About everyone I have asked about this has the same problem. It is a Firebird thing, maybe a Pontiac thing.

Gas gauges are the most inaccurate guage in a car. In all my cars, even my new s-10 with what should be an accurate gauge, I usually decide when to fill up more based on the trip odometer then on the gas gauge. More then half of the cars I've had in the past few years have had inaccurate or broken gas gauges. So my opinion is just live with the problem, dont bother trying to fix it, because even in like new condition it is not going to be an accurate, linear, fullscale representation of how much gas you have left.

I have to agree with the previous reply, the fuel gauge is very inaccurate. Mine will go about 50 miles before it breaks the full mark after refueling. Then it just swings all over the place. After setting overnight it goes up a little.
My advice, just use it as a reference only, and as recommended by some, don't let your tank drop below 1/4 otherwise you run the risk of sucking up some sediment from the bottom of the tank. It also keeps moisture from condensing inside the tank.

Re: Gas gage wrong!

My gas gage stays below empty even if its a full tank, there is power to it because when I turn it on it moves a little bit. I can't figure out whats wrong with it!
