Manuall swapped 87.. tach issues
hello, first time making a thread, seems that I have hit a wall. we got a 1987 with a T56 trans, it also appears to have had a 350 installed. car runs well, though its hard to start. once its running, it idles well, and warms up nicely, but when you take off, it falls on its face. literally, sometimes stalling all together if you arent careful with the throttle. i feel like since we added the Dakota module for the tach, the car doesnt seem to drive right, i am suspicious that it is giving a fuel cutoff comand because of the tack jumping up to the redline while it is clearly more like 3-4k.
does anyone have any experioences with these modules, or swaps that could point me in the right direction?
is the fuel shut off a thing when the car redlines?
I have checked the wiring, and assured im on an "ignition hot: key on" circuit, and it is definitly on a good ground.
I can connect to the module, and get no warnings about connectivity ( ie BT interruptions, module faults)
if I can provided any more info, LMK i think this is everything prudent...
cheers.

yeah, thats what i was thinking. my apologies, im more of a Euro guy. so the VSS ( vehicle speed sensor?) would cut off the fuel if it detected a red line situation? would the piggyback module we installed, being out of calibration, be whats killing the performance? the module connected the digital signal/ sensor to the analog tach cable.
thanks in advance for your time..

Actually I think depending on icm there is a speed and rpm cut off. I don’t think any stock calibration tunes had the rpm cut off that effects spark cut out enabled it was maxed at 10k. Some speed cut off where 115 or so and 255mph depending on the tune. Does the tach adapter hook to the coil or icm ? Runs fine with it disconnected?

Re: Manuall swapped 87.. tach issues
its a Dakota Technologies (came recommended by another shop), but it operates by connecting to the digital out put on the trans, then the cable connects to the box then goes to the cluster. so i think the box translates the speed from the sensor, to a cable output. car ran good before install. ill try and disconnect it then drive it again while disconnected and confirm the issue.

can you see ecm data . Is the ecm receiving a 2k ppm signal ?
not a diy prom topic

ill give that a shot, this was a modded engine/trans job. so ill look to see if it even has the OBD port and.
ill check the performance while disconnected, and see about comms with the ECU once i get it back in my hands, and report back my findings.
thanks again for the leads.

update, the piggy back module from Dakota Digital is okay. it only measures speed and not the tach. so moving onto why the tach is going bananas.

Re: Manuall swapped 87.. tach issues
got it all squared away, the speedo needed to be calibreated... finally got it to take the calibration after 4 attempts... my advice? if youre going to manual swap your camaro, just bite the bullet, and get the housing retro fitted for the cable ( T56 trans) its a more expensive route, and turn around isn't the quickest, but to me it seems the easiest.
