Chip/Prom Burning?

I have a 87 IROC that I've installed a GMPP 383 with the original MAF TPI and a long list of perf parts and I would like to be able to learn to burn Proms in the hope I can fine tune it and make it run better. Could someone give me a list of everything I should purchaseand a source, to get started? I have a laptop and my computer skills are average, I know just enough to get myself in trouble, but with some help from you guys I'm willing to try this. Thanks.

You'll need a APU1 Autoprom =$329.oo (Comes with the tunerpro RT software)
and a
GP1 package (the GM adapter with 2 chips) =$55.oo

Then you can start tuning.... Go to the tutorials.... and read read read!
The whole thing will seem like Chinese until you're looking at you laptop and start playing with it, but the hours of reading will give you a start!

The thing I like about the Autoprom is being able to watch what my car is doing while I drive it and change the tune on the fly with a click of the mouse and see if it helped... if the change didn't help I just click it back.... easy peezy
Read up on Emulation

Re: Chip/Prom Burning?

Thanks GTA Sammy, that's the info I was looking for. I went to the Moates site, but I couldn't get a grasp as to what I needed to get started.

Re: Chip/Prom Burning?

Actually, the two products I told you about were exactly what you needed to get started...

Check out the different tutorials on this site and on Craig Moate's site to understand it more...

If you didn't find this page, read here:

It should answer a few questions.

Re: Chip/Prom Burning?

I've been looking all over for it... but there's a page/link that gives you all of the instructions that you'll need as far as
A) pulling your ECM down
B) Pulling your old Memcal out
C) attaching the G1, Zif and so on....

I'll keep looking for ya cause I know this stuff is hard to understand (& Find) at first...

TA DAH
http://support.moates.net/2008/10/31/g1/
This is a great read and explains the hardware aspect of it all...

In the 7th picture it shows the Prom Chip being inserted into the G1 Adapter.... this is where I have inserted the "ZIF socket" so I can change my hardware from Chip to Autoprom (Emulator) easily....
The ZIF stays firmly on the G1 Adapter but has a locking tab the will hold your Chip in or let it go as you want without wear and tear....
I can pull the Chip out of the ZIF Socket and insert the Autoprom Ribbon when I wanna do some data logging and Tuning.

Have fun

Re: Chip/Prom Burning?

Oh yeah, read this too

http://support.moates.net/?s=ZIF

Some of the info will not pertain to you but alot of it will...
There are ZIF pics...
HDR1 Pics... which you can use to read original chips or aftermarket chips (although you don't need to because Moates has a huge library of PROM codes)
The AUTOPROM FAQ section... I just printed it and kept it in the car...
TunerPro FAQ

WoW I forgot how much info is there...
and that's just hookin it up!!!! Don't be scared!!!
Buhahahah

I hope all that helps you and other members who may just be starting out!!!

Re: Chip/Prom Burning?

Thanks again for all the help. I already ordered the Autoprom and the adapter from Moates.net. Can't wait for it to come and get started. I have a custom chip in there now and the car runs good, but as I make changes I want to be able to maximize my tune.

Re: Chip/Prom Burning?

Get yourself a wideband O2 sensor and use this as a guide....

Re: Chip/Prom Burning?

Wow, lots of good information, but it's way over my head at this point. I haven't even got my autoprom yet. The wide-band O2 sensor, is this a separate system for the sole purpose of measuring air fuel ratio? Where and what would you suggest I get?

Yes.

I use Innovate's LC-1 controller, you can select from a wide variety of gauges.

Another good one here http://www.dynamicefi.com/TT-1.php

Re: Chip/Prom Burning?

I used this one....
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G2995/ for $250.oo

It's Innovates LC-1 Hardware ie; Controller,Wideband Sensor, O2 Bung, Wiring Harness and Software and comes with Innovates Instructions...
With a Summit Racing Equip Digital Gauge....

This Innovate LC-1 Controller is nice because it can replace your original Narrowband O2 Sensor and give your ECM a narrowband signal while giving you a Wideband readout on your digital gauge.

Re: Chip/Prom Burning?

I am about where IROC 343 is, at least in planning. I have a lot of electronics background but mostly analog design. When we burned a chip it was a rom and we blew links.
If I understand correctly, my 87 350 TPI TA used a 122165 that has a UV eraseable EPROM.
I want to use my laptop and USB connector to program a EEPROM, troubleshoot, monitor performance and make changes on the fly. I found a chip replacement 27C128 but it is listed as obsolete. My car is stock but I plan changes. sorry to ramble on. Tex WS6
