Re: Chip problems

Hey, I got your e-mail with the BIN attached. However, the file appears to be blank. Nothing but zeros.

gm_ecm has a pretty extensive collection of stock BINs. If you can get your prom BCC code (a 4 letter + 4 number code stamped on the chip, example: AMYB 0675) you could look through this page and see if you can find it. If you do a search probably just use the letter part of the code, because some of the listings don't use the numbers. Or you can just post your code, and I can take a look.

If you can't get your code, there is one listing that is categorized specifically under the 1228063 ECM. You can find that for download here. It is 4KB as is, so if you want to use it you should be able to just download it and follow the steps outlined in my other post.

Re: Chip problems

Alright, my stock chip says "AMXZ" and "0667" on it. That one doesn't seem to be on the list.

Re: Chip problems

Hmm, well that sucks... So much for it being easy... I looked around some more and was unable to find any AMXZ BINs. I did find one other '88 TBI BIN, and just for fun I compared it to that AMYB BIN that I have been using for reference, and it had quite a few differences. Mostly in number, not so much in degree. Like it was an earlier or later version of the same thing.

I think a few people would tell you that there really should be no issue with starting from a BIN that is not an exact match to your original. However, I would think it would be ideal to have one that is at least for the same configuration as your vehicle, i.e. same transmission and rear gears and emission spec. Unfortunately, I don't have the references available to decode the BCCs.

We know what your car is, but if we could find out what this AMYB BIN is we would have a better idea if it would be a good starting point for you.

*check that... just found a huge list of bcc codes*

The AMYB that I have been using to help you and linked to above is for (according to what I just found) an '88 F-body with 5.0 TBI L03 and a manual trans. with a 3.08 rear gear ratio. That's pretty close to you isn't it? Little off on the gear ratio, but not too bad.

In fact, it's closer than your original chip. The AMXZ says it is for a '88 F-body with 5.0 TBI L03, auto trans, and 2.73 rear gears.

What do you think?

Re: Chip problems

That makes sense because my car originally was an automatic with 2.73 gears. I swapped the tranny and the rear. That AMYB is probably alot better.
Im not sure what Im running off of now, but im pretty sure its a bin for a manual car. When the stock chip worked, after I swapped trannies, the car was a little quirky. It would die if I didn't shift from 5th to 4th fast enough, and the idle always went way low as I would push in the clutch coming to a stop, I assume simply because it wasn't programmed for any of that

Re: Chip problems

Well, I guess that would be my recommendation then. Just start with that AMYB. If you wanted to get something more exact on the gear ratio, I think you'll have to go through some other channels, like Ronny suggested above.

I'm not sure what changes are made in the BIN to accommodate for different gear ratios, so I wouldn't be able to tell you what to do to make the changes yourself. I'm pretty sure that there isn't just a simple "Gear Ratio" scalar in the BIN.

I'd be willing to bet that most anyone would never notice a drivability difference between a 3.08 BIN and a 3.73. However, I would definitely understand if you wanted to make sure to account for everything.

Re: Chip problems

Great! I took the AMYB bin and set the idle to 1300RPM, actually to my surprise, when I fired it up it stayed at 1300! so I guess im burning now!

Re: Chip problems

I wish I could help further, but I honestly don't know anything about actual tuning. I just needed to burn a stock BIN for my car...

I don't know if maybe you have already seen it, but all I could really do is point you toward the sticky thread. It has a decent number of articles regarding tuning for the '8063 ECM under the "Chapter 5" section.

Re: Chip problems

I'll tell you guys just using that stock bin, I haven't been able to datalog yet but it feels like it has a ton more midrange. I have no idea what I was using before, but im guessing it was really mild on timing or something. Hopefully soon I'll be modifying it with the help of one of the gurus on TBI. Need more! lol
