Two different chip adapters, 1 works 1 doesnt? WHY?

Interesting thing I came across while trying to tune another car.

Its an MAF setup car using a 6E type bin. He has a different moates adapter than what my car uses. I have the zif socket with lever handle that moates currently sells in the Gp1 adapters seen here:

I use the SST 27SF512's just fine with either BURN1 or BURN2 programmers, as I have both. I also have some older 29C256 chips that ALSO work just fine in my car with either burner. Burn, plug chip in, close handle on ZIF and car runs fine.

Now this guy I tried to help tune has a MOates adapter that has a slightly different adapter. Its got a socket with a different handle like this below:

The handle is stiffer and harder to open/close but its got a 27C256 style chip on it with some tune and runs pretty good. I havent been successful at reading that chip with either Burn1 or Burn2 which is another issue I will ask about later.

The problem is when I burn a tune for this car using either of my KNOWN good chips, 27SF512 or 29C256 that have worked in MY car, it wont run when the handle is fully closed.

When you just drop the chip into the adapter, and DONT close the handle all the way down, the car starts fine. While its running, ALDL wont connect with this setup, but DOES connect when using his current chip.
While running with handle open with my chip, I close the handle to lock chip in the motor shuts off!!

I look at both chips and cant find a difference other than the fact that his chip appears to have SLIGHTLY longer pins but that shouldnt matter. My chips work on my car with my adapter, but wont work in his.

Strangest thing I've seen. What could this be?? I have burned some chips for other cars that have worked with same style chips and the current moates GP1 adapter from what I can tell. Any ideas!!???

First thing that comes to mind is that the chip offset is wrong.

Is the CEL flashing when running with the lever in the "open" position?

Re: Two different chip adapters, 1 works 1 doesnt? WHY?

It wasnt flashing but I believe it was on. I cant remember. With it closed I dont think the jumper pin trick worked to check codes so something was wrong at the connection to the chip.

I am using the tunerpro RT default offsets for the various chip types. Never had a problem with this before when switching chip types. I am using a pretty old version I guess, its V4 that I got somewhere back in '06 or '07? Maybe I need to reinstall the drivers/software?

Doesnt really explain why I can burn chips to my other car but could be a reason why I no longer can read any chip i put in there.

EDIT:Well tried again to burn a chip then read that chip and it worked this time. Not sure why it wasnt working before.

Now I just need to try to read that 27c256 chip again to get the base file this car is running on.

Still doesnt solve why the chips dont work in that adapter setup than the other.

Re: Two different chip adapters, 1 works 1 doesnt? WHY?

Back in the day i started out using the low profile ZIF socket (blue one). Eventually I wore it out and it failed me. The car kept cutting out and eventually didn't run at all.

I now use the standard ZIF socket. It is built much better and i haven't had a problem since.

come to think of it, the g4 adapter (not sure which one you have though) i got from moates had a push in socket on the PCB which allowed me to use any type of ZIF socket i wanted. If your friend's came that way too, you can pull out the socket and insert the chip directly into the adapter board's socket. It isn't easy and you can bend pins on the chip, but it would tell you weather or not your ZIF is bad.

I just dont understand how the car runs just fine on the 27c256 chip it has in it. There is something in the chip I guess that makes the difference?

My thought is, that maybe the socket is failing when closed (internal derangement).
Maybe his chip has fat legs? One bent just right?

Re: Two different chip adapters, 1 works 1 doesnt? WHY?

Now that I've started burning in earnest, I note that one of the chips has a hard time taking data from the Pocket Programmer II. It writes, but on verify, fails when it comes to what it is "expecting" to see. Pull/reseat the chip a few times, and it eventually works.

SOMETIMES same chip will, with the Moates setup in the first picture, not work when inserted, even though it apparently programmed correctly. Key on, fan comes on.

Another chip, no problem at all. Legs have been bent a few times on both of them (they are quite soft lol!) but only one has started to exhibit issues.

Good point here, I have been there before with my own car. I noticed key on, fan on and when I tried to start it, it ran funny. Reset the chip in the socket and it would work again.
But on his car we tried for few hours on 2 seperate days a few weeks apart. I tried his car and got nothing, then I worked on my own car up in PA for the weekend, then came back down to TX and tried his car again. NO success, I put the chip in several times. Just didnt work when the socket was closed but did start when it was open but not 100%.

Kinda confused.
