Windows 98?

So I recently got a "new" laptop because mine doesn't have a serial port. I installed TunerPro RT. All was good. I connect the Ostrich, search for drivers, find them and install. When I open TunerPro it recognizes the Ostrich is connected, but when I try to download the binary from the Ostrich it says "download failed".

I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them. Now it worked and I could download, emulate, verify and all that good stuff. After unplugging the ostrich a couple times to plug my flash drive in, (only one usb port) the ostrich is still recognized by the software but it will no longer communicate and comes up the the same error. So I tried reinstalling the drivers again, but this time it did not fix the problem.

Has anyone else had the same problem with Windows 98? I know the ostrich is good because I tested it on my other laptop with XP and it works great, I just don't want to have two laptops in my car.

Re: Windows 98?

I would if I could. It only has 32MB RAM. I tried windows 2000 but even that was too heavy for it. I know there are people here using windows 98 so I figured I would ask if anyone has had this issue before.

Re: Windows 98?

OK I put Windows 2000 back on there and everything works the way it is supposed to. It is slow but it works. There must either be an issue with the Windows 98 drivers or the copy of windows that I have.

Re: Windows 98?

wasn't there something about windows 98 SE that had usb suport? you could try getting one of those pci(whatever) slot to usb cards. that way you'd have more than one usb to use.

Re: Windows 98?

Actually I was using 98 SE. It still has horrible USB support. I got the laptop for free and could probably get another one a little bit better for the same price as a usb pcmcia card. I'll just stick with windows 2000. It takes a bit longer to boot up but as long as I'm not running anything other than TunerPro it works fine.

Re: Windows 98?

Windows 2000 was one of the superior OS's along with XP. You could always get a PCI card to allow for a serial port on a desktop, and since desktops are more easily upgradeable it would run things waaay faster.

Re: Windows 98?

I already have a desktop with a serial port but I only need a serial port for my homemade datalogging cable, so I needed a laptop for that. So I got this one for free. I am happy with how I got it working now. I only installed windows 2000 and then the ostrich driver and tunerpro. As long as I don't try to do anything else at the same time it works fine. But if someone has some old 144 pin laptop memory I would be willing to take it off your hands.

Re: Windows 98?

I never tried the Ostrich, but I had no difficulties with my USB extension card for other applications I used when I added it to my old Windows 98 machine. If you are using a USB extension card already, go to their website for any updates.

I also upgraded to the SE verison of Windows 98 from Microsoft's website.
