New 29C256 adapters are in, availability should be fine for a good while:

OK guys, I'm going to get into burning my own chips soon. My question is.... are these pieces you're showing in the post above what I would need to get started...what is the difference between the two? These would be the same thing as the "pocket programmer" only in "raw" form , correct?

Hi Craig,
I have been trying to access your site and it keeps saying I am being forwarded but it just errors out. I am looking to buy one of your adapters.

No problem, just check out http://moates.net/ and look under F*rd stuff. Only catch right now is that you need to have a programmer that'll do 27SF512's. Or use a 27C512...

Man craig, ALl I have to say is you are awesome. Thanks for all your contribution to the prom burning community, your software is awesome and your hardware is just damned cool. I'll be buying the zif socket in awhile when I can start getting the rest of the things i need for burning. Keep it up we all appreciate it!

Keep up the excellent work Craig!
I'll be hitting you up for an EPROM adapter after the holiday bills get paid.
Thanks for helping so many of us in our quest for speed and the full potential of the engines we have buitl!

Craig.
Very nice work on the switchable 8 program chip.
You're a f*cking ninja. That is the coolest thing I've seen in a while. As far as switching programs, I feel stupid for asking.. But the car has to be off, you switch it, then restart it.. Correct?
What is required to burn a 8 program chip? Same programmer?
Just throwing some ideas around.

You can switch 'on-the-fly' without any problem. It's just 8 position for the 2732-to-29C256 adaptation. For the TPI stuff it's 16-position.
Switching can be done either at the adapter with a 'local' rotary switch or remotely via 6-ft ribbon cable with keychain-sized switch/display.
Mark Mansur's new "ECM Edit" (see archives/recent msgs) has support for 'multi-bin' compilation built in. Once compiled, just burn 'as usual'.

Ok, it must be more complicated than just getting the flash proms and using those instead of the 27C128's... am I correct? If so WHAT IS NEEDED?? thanks

The TBI / 2732 conversion stuff has been a hassle for me because of the contacting issue at the GM / Robinson Nugent 'socket'. If the sockets could easily be desoldered and replaced with a regular DIP socket by the user, it would make a WORLD of difference, and I might offer the 'G2' adapter again. As it stands, I have discontinued offering it due to the problems some folk were having.

Folks,
I've put together a new 2732A-to-29C256 adapter. Too much hounding I guess! It's simplified compared to the previous unit, with no bank switching. It requires that you (or someone) do some desoldering. Details are at www.moates.net so if you're interested in this kinda thing, I have something to offer again.
Those old units I made were just too much of a pain with trying to get a good fit into the 'stock' socket. These new ones, while they do require removal of the 'stock' socket, will leave you much happier. And of course, you can always go back to the original chip (as long as the original socket was 0.6" spacing, some were a squirrely 0.45 or so!).
BTW, the Jameco 39351 can work, it's just not going to make great contact all the time, and can 'pop out' of the socket due to fitment issues. To get it to really be good, you need to desolder the original (takes about 15 minutes total).
Have fun!

Folks,
There are a few new items on the menu for the DIY-EFI dabbler. In particular, there is a new ALDL-to-USB converter/cable and a USB-Based chip reader/programmer. More info is available at www.moates.net, with additional documentation and availability info on the way, but here's a quick rundown:
APS1: AutoProm Package: Serial Version
Emulates 27128-27512 chips and more. Performs ALDL communications at 160/8192 baud, programs AT29C256 and AM29F040 chips. Has 3-channel 10-bit A/D provision. Includes AutoProm device, A/C power adapter, 28-pin emulation cable, OBD1-style ALDL cable CABL1, DB9 serial cable, 1x 29C256 chip, 1x 29F040 chip, and Mark Mansur's "TunerPro" Software license.
APU1: AutoProm Package: USB Version
Same as above except the following: (1) USB and not Serial, (2) No external power supply provisions (none needed), (3) Included AutoXray-style ALDL cable plugs right in without modification, (4) Programs 27SF512 chips.
ALDU1: USB-to-ALDL Converter
Goes straight from USB to ALDL. Compatible with all the popular programs in Windows (TunerPro, DataMaster, WinALDL). Will do 160-baud and 8192-baud communication. Not for use with the 'Moates' ECM8xx software or other DOS-based programs. Self-powered, and it has a built-in switch to select 'open/10k/short' mode for the A-B pins. Comes with a short USB cable, but requires either the CABL1 or CABL2 for connection to the car, depending on your application.
CABL1: OBD1-Style ALDL Connector
Connects directly to AutoProm or ALDLU1. Is used on most pre-1996 GM EFI cars.
CABL2: OBD2-Style ALDL Connector Connects directly to AutoProm or ALDLU1. Is used primarily on 94/95 GM LT1s.
BURN1: "Flash&Burn" USB-Based Chip Reader / Programmer
Reads any chip (2732A/27C128/256/512/010/020/040). Programs all necessary flash chips (AT29C256, SST27SF512, AM29F040, etc). Works straight off the USB port. This is ALL you need for chip read/write.
HDR1: Memcal Header
Plugs into your 'stock' P4-style Memcals. Allows you to download your original 'factory' chip contents directly using a chip programmer/reader. Very durable for repeated use.
Hope this helps make things easier and more interesting!
Best regards,
-Craig

Oh wow... so much good stuff they sold for years. I love my Ostrich emulator...
Yikes, I may burn a chip now and take the emulator off (I've essentially been running it permanently). That way it lasts.
it's a shame he's retiring, but totally understand.

That's sad to hear. I wonder if anyone else is going to take their place. I'm good on chips. Hopefully my chip burner lasts.

Re: ZIF Adapters, eproms and more from Craig Moates
Getting the parts to build product is the real issue here. It is affecting every manufacturer of electronic modules (ECMs, BCMs, VCMs, TCMs, radios and everything else). It isn't any fun to do weeks of redesign to find out that it is just a temporary solution. When the big guys that are building new vehicles can't get parts. What parts can us little guys get?

Just PayPal’ed $80 for a Burn2 plus extra cables, score!
I hope the people over at Moates get the much needed rest that they deserve, I also hope they are able keep the support page up as long as they possibly can, so much useful information.
Is there anyone remotely close to Moates that are supplying equipment/parts?

Re: ZIF Adapters, eproms and more from Craig Moates
There are alternatives on the market for things like emulators...
https:/secure.transtronics.com/EPROM_Emulator.html
I was running one of these before my Ostrich. Tunerpro supports it

Others like aldl cables, red Devil River, and 1320 sell aldl cables . I’d opt for 1320 . Burners available for older and sst even boot leg chips. Intronics for emulator. So still some resources for similar parts but in my opinion lesser quality.

I’ve been using the Ostrich since V1.0. Now a V2 since it came out. Honestly I’ve run my
LT5 on one since 2010. Obviously, reliability has been amazing. Craig, Mark, RBob have been the “enablers” for this crazy hobby and our obsession. Thank you to all of you.
Craig, enjoy your “retirement”. You deserve it!
