charcoal canister operation

does the ecm turn on the solenoid when the vehicle is started. or is it a pressure sensor. i know once the tank is pressured it pushes past the vacuum valve. and can the settings be reset in the ecm. when i reinstalled the canister my gas mileage went to .

Re: charcoal canister operation

There are both NO and NC solenoids. A NO one will be powered to prevent purge from occurring. Make sure that you have the correct one.

For purge to occur typically the engine needs to be up to temperature, the throttle open, and the vehicle moving. Some calibrations are also set up so that the ECM needs to be in closed loop for purge to occur.

Does the tank still hold pressure? I'm thinking that maybe the vapor control valve is bad and the purge is pulling fumes right from the tank.

Re: charcoal canister operation

you know the purge control valve is brand new. i blew n it and it does have a lot of resistance. but will finally blow thru. and now that you have asked the tank did not have pressure on it. since i have your attention. how much pressure does it take to open the purge control valve. i can blow thru if i try real hard.

but i bet it is sucking fumes from the tank and causing the 02 to read lean like a vacuum leak. darn it i want this to work right as not i dont have fumes in the garage or in the car.

There is a thread on the general tech board here where I listed the various pressures for the vapor control and tank vent. IIRC, it is a little under 1 psi to open the vapor control valve.

Make sure that the canister vent is open. Should be marked VENT on the top of the canister. If not open the engine will pull right through from the tank when in purge.

Re: charcoal canister operation

i have talked to several people about this. they say to unhook it and run it to see if i get the same 22mpg. then hook it back up and see what i get. from what i see you get no vacuum from the port at an idle since it is above the tb butterflies. but as soon as you crack the idle it has vacuum. me and the tuner are at a loss. unless the new purge valve is bad.

Re: charcoal canister operation

weird as it may seem. i have an open element air cleaner on my tbi. i am going to put a vacuum fitting on the bottom of that air cleaner and hook the canister up to that. will report back.

please tell me what you think about this.

Re: charcoal canister operation

Rbo, i installed the EZ efi on my car and now i have tank fumes and MUCH pressure in the tank when my canister is connected so i yanked the hose which gave me the vapor issue. i didnt take everything out of my car harness wise yet so i reinstalled my stock ECM hoping this would fix it but it didnt.

any sugguestions on how to resolve this?
