MegaSquirted TA - first startup

Yesterday I fired the engine up with the following combination:

Edelbrock Victor Jr, homeconverted to EFI
A homemade plenum with 2 Volvo 850 TB:s.
Homemade fuelrail made out of 12 mm copper water piping.
Fuelpump from an old audi
Fuelfilter from the same audi
MegaSquirt version 2.2
8 - 42 lb injectors

I programmed the MS with the values of my injectors and enginesize and then let the computer calculate the engines needs.

It fired up directly and the idle was HIGH. I know why, because the plenum wasn't bolted on, it was just sitting on the engine and I hadn't connected the brake servo hoose. But it ran fine during my 3 second try.

I haven't installed the oillines to the turbo's yet so I ran the engine with just the turboheaders. The sound was soooo sweeeet.

Now I really have to get the rest of the turbosystem installed so that I can take a testdrive.

I don't trust my homemade fuelrail so I've ordered a pair of Edelbrock Victor Jr alu-fuelrails from Jegs.

Here it goes, I haven't got pictures of the complete installation yet, need to bring the camera to the garage.

The plenum
http://aldengard.lixom.nu/gallery/in...version?page=3

The MegaSquirt EFI wiring.
http://aldengard.lixom.nu/gallery/EF...ter/ms_wiring5

One of the T04E turbos.
http://aldengard.lixom.nu/gallery/Turbos/turbo1

Still with the old RPM intake, not the converted Victor Jr.

And yes, the air-filters will be relocated to a colder position.

My ugly AC-delete box before paint.

I'll try and take some new pictures of the current setup.

More pictures to come.

Could you post your MS parameters if you get a chance? My setup is quite similar to yours and Ive been having some trouble with the cranking PW and required fuel values.

Mine is a twin .60/.63 t3 350 with a HSR. Im running MegasquirtnEDIS and 42lb injectors.

FWIW, I found a non A/C heater box from an early S-10 for $10 that bolted up, and looked very similiar.

I've got mine up and running now as well. No boost yet, Im waiting on getting/assembling my TechEdge wbo2 kit so i can get a good safe tune down. Using a heated NB o2 sensor to get anything more than a roughed in fuel map is pretty sketchy.

True. I had considered the whole DIY-WB ripoff thing when I was deciding on a kit to buy, but in the end TE had (what seemed to me) like the best balance of functions, quality, and cost. I feel a little guilty about giving a sleaze like that my money, but this is what works best for me. The guys behind DIY-WB could have easily written up a patent that would have prevented anyone from using their idea for profit, but still distribute it freely to people that wanted it. In my opinion the legal and intellectual property aspects of that project were very poorly handled. But I dont know everything about it, I could be wrong.

Having a patent isn't enough, you'd still need to pay the legal fees involved to bring an infringement case into court. And the lawyers that do that sort of stuff don't exactly work for free. Pursuing a case across an international boundary multiplies the cost involved several times over.

It should be obvious that a "not for profit" design doesn't provide much in the way of income from which to pay the lawyers. So any challenge would have to come out of pocket, and realistically you'd never come close to recouping the expenses, even if you did win. Ultimately, only the lawyers would come out ahead.

So there only realistic means of protection, is if people choose to do the right thing. And since that didn't happen, it shouldn't be too surprising that the folks who did the design work aren't all that enthusiastic about doing any more public domain work. So we all lose out, on what else would have followed.

I haven't got the parameters from the other computer. But it's the default ones except for the size and number of injectors.

I've had vacation for a few weeks but haven't been at home so I haven't worked on the car. I'll try to get som days on it this coming week. The new Edelbrock Fuel Rails fit perfectly - no more fuel leaks. I just need to get some AN fittings to connect the whole fuel system to the FR now.

And my digital camera is gone, can't take any more pictures.

Interesting combo you have going there,

What audi pump are you using? Make sure you keep the MS updates going, I am most likely going to be using MS to run my Turbo 20V project for my Audi S2 Clone.

I think it's an old Audi GT pump I've got, it's not enough to handle the fuel supply when the turbos starts building boost but that pump is only there as a trial pump. A new bosch one will soon take its place.

I've been working on the oil return lines the last two days so soon I can start her up with the turbos connected.

Ya, and then gone to Australia and hired lawyers to hash it out.
It was sad enough that someone had to cash in on it, sadder yet was the following of people that thought piracy was OK.
Have you noticed a total lack of neat DIY stuff since?.

Hi again

Time runs fast... I experienced some "hard to solve" starter problems back in august and I actually got bored of the project for a while (4 months), but it's corrected as of yesterday evening. I've also been digging into the wiring harness some more.

The car started up once again and it idles alot better now when the plenum is bolted down, and the turbos are spinning along nice..

Anyway, I´ll try to keep the talk in this thread about the MegaSquirt part. Hopefully I'll be able to take it for a testrun even during the winter, if the ammount of snow is low..

I've a new BOSCH pump waiting to be installed and I've also got a WideBand O2 meter waiting to be installed. The WB meter will be connected to the MegaSquirt so that MS will make the O2 corrections via WB instead of the current narrowband O2 sensor.

The WB meter is almost a necessary item when you're tuning an engine without a dyno. I'll keep you posted.

PS! On this page you can se the latest picture of the enginebay:

nice, someone else i can get info from. my megasquirt project should be beginning very soon. i've got all the boards assembled, just waiting to be finished with classes and finals before the fun begins. i'll be sticking with a tbi body for the moment (seeing as i've got a couple lying around) and maybe step up to something better down the line.

You guys all knew of the www.msefi.com boards, right? It is not hard to tune MS without the WB O2 sensor. When I started my car I actually had to tune it by ear mostly until I had all of my problems solved. If you guys need help with anything about MS, give me a jingle, I have been running it since June. MS II comes out in another month and then I will get that.
