Help 1986 Trans Am AC Pancake to rotary Compressor.
Hello All,
It's been 27 years since my last Third Gen I'm back! I got a great deal on solid 1986 Trans AM with the non-working R-12 AC unit. I'm tempted to swap out the Pancake compressor with a New Rotary clutch compressor. I'm Looking for the Driver side AC Bracket & Mount, Compressor, & accompanying belt. There seems to be a surcharge / Premium on these kits, and I can't find the bracket sold separately on their sites for my car.
I have so many parts I'm buying I can't afford to give away an extra 150.00 - 250.00 here and there. (Let me say I don't think their prices are outrageous, but I can't see brackets costing 200.00 dollars) They have to be out there cheaper somewhere. I just have to Find the right one "Bracket" "Compressor" and "V belt" 305 LB9 TPI "F"
Any Sources? Links? Input and Opinions would be Appreciated! Or Should I Just get the OE AC Delco Pancake and save myself the headache. Yes, I'm going to 134a on this I've had the car for a month and a half and everyone in SW Florida Runs away from R-12 Yelling you must convert! ( its a cult eyes roll )

I would stick with the Delco style, but only if you're going to thoroughly flush and leak test the system. Make sure you change orifice tube sizes (I believe orange is the preferred for our climate) I'm near Tampa if you need assistance

Thanks! That would be the money saver. Yes, I'm going to be buying a new OE AC Delco compressor then with new hoses, Liquid line, Drier, O rings, forgot about the orifice tube sizes (I believe orange is the preferred for our climate) <---- didn't know that Thanks! Appreciate your help Ratfink6923!

I put a new Delco OEM Style on. My 1987 IROC had a slightly different connection and had to use provided seals. I am not sure they make the exact line connection anymore. I flushed all the lines and condenser really good with a device I bought. I had a hairline crack on the evaporator canister connection so I fixed that. PO must have cranked down on that plastic nut because they thought it was leaking there and broke it. Hard to see. Thought it was the new seals. So far no leaks and works good.

that compressor is supposed to be better than the R4 design. The good thing about the R-4 style is that its readily available if you ever need another. IMO though, if you do te R4... do the serp conversion! it can get pricey though.
It's a lot of work but IMO worth it because its s much easier belt setup wise and parts availability.....I think the compressor is a bit more expensive for the serp version though. But the rubber hoses for the 85-87 arent avaialble as far as I am aware and only 82-84 and . 88-92 are made.

if its still not available, they are SIMILAR to the V6 hoses which are available.... but I think the angle of the metal parts goes down vs up as the V6 ones at the compressor end..... I recal lthinking they could work but never saw it through. That or the 82-84 but the hoses would cross over the tpi intake boots

The R4 has proven to be a garbage design time and time again. I will not touch one without swapping a Sanden into its place. I have also done a 2.2L S10 V7 swap on one. The V7 works exceptionally well and typically does not cycle making it operate much more smoothly with more consistent cooling.
Next set of R4 brackets I have on a SBC will be modified a bit and holding a V7. The Sanden SD7H15 works ok, but the V7 would have much better idle and low speed performance on the G20 van system I just set up. V7 unfortunately does not even come close to bolting in place of a HT6.
