single fan to dual LT1 fan conversion.

OK,

so last sumer while roadtripping to Spain in the summer.
my car ran hot....specially since in the summer its mostly cruising speeds, stop and go under 30mph with outside temps over 100 degrees.
on the road to spain ( route du soleil ) I even lost my precieus R134 charge due to the fan not being able to cool the A/C condensor while I was in a traffic jam during noon near Lyon.

So I decided to do the upgrade from single to dual LT1 fans.
after a lot of searching I found the assembly and also took the 4th gen upper radiator mount.

I also got a 212 degree fan switch for in the passenger head
a new GM relay + pigtail + radiator fan connecter. so that I can make it all a stock looking conversion

So today I looked into it while working on the car.
it looks like the 4th gen upper radiator mount aint gonna work. ( its not wide enough either for the 3th gen radiator )
and the standard single fan upper radiator mound doesnt fit either.
so, how did you guys fit it in there.
and what did you all modifiy to fit.

also, how is the stock single fan radiator mounted at he botten.
I can see the bracket with the 2 13mm bolts that hold the fan. but where is this bracket connected to the body...

any help and/or pics would be really appreciated.

- Pacesetter header
-Dynomax Vt exhasut
-compcams 260H cam.
-180 degrees thermostat.
-shaved heads 0.02".

Re: single fan to dual LT1 fan conversion.

Most guys 'upgrade' to a Thirdgen duel fan set-up. I've never tried the LT1 set-up so I've got no input for you on that....

There's a couple of 10mm bolts that hold the bottom bracket to the lower radiator support. Some cars use a power steering cooler that might get in the way a little - but the bolts are easy enough to find and remove.

Re: single fan to dual LT1 fan conversion.

I was thinking of removing the power steering cooling lines. and run a real powersteer cooler. and put the cooler behind the holes in the fan guard underneath the passenger fan.

( got that ready to go in the car btw )

I'm working on a single fan to LT1 fan conversion. It's far better than the stock dual fans the third gens came with. As far as mounting goes I haven't gotten that far, but the LT1 fans require a dual ground trigger to work properly and you'll need a relay for them. I can't remember who it was now on there but they make wiring kits for this conversion but since you are in Europe it might be difficult to go that route, but you could possibly pick his brain and build your own harness. I'll have more info for you this weekend on mounting the fans since I will be working on it more then.

Re: single fan to dual LT1 fan conversion.

I'm not to worried about the wiring actually.
( im good at those things )
1 fan will work with the original harnass.
the second fan will get a fused line from the battery. through a relay to the fan.
the relay itsel will be switched by a thermal switch in the passenger head ( just like on V8's )

already got a brand new fuel pump/fan relay + harnass from rockauto.
together with a stock and a 212 degrees on thermal switch.

actually it look slike the only piece im missing is a modified upper radiator support ( dual or single fan )

Re: single fan to dual LT1 fan conversion.

I put Lt1 dual fans into my 85 iroc. I used the 3rd gen upper mount and trimmed it out. I left the part of that helps hold the hose up. On the fans I had I had to trim some so it would clear the power steering box. I used two screw through the upper mount into the fan. Bottom was a snug fit with no extra mounting bolts. It fit perfect in the lower channel

IIRC there were 2 different dual fan systems for the LT1 cars. Which set-up is it that is 'better' than the stock Thirdgen set-up & why ?? Just Curious to know how or what makes it 'better' than the Thirdgen system.

I've currently got stock Thirdgen dual fans cooling my LT1 thru a stock Thirdgen radiator - no complaints. The fan controls were custom built following the 95 LT1 fan wiring schematics & using factory LT1 relays/parts.
