Starting From Scratch A/C
First off, let me say thanks for the wonderful help this site has provided me in the last several weeks. Ive been reading as a guest only and have yet to post anything until now. Ive found that you guys have ALOT of info covered on this site without starting a new topic most of the time! However, im starting from scratch on an a/c system on this 1983 Z28 I just bought about a month ago. PO has removed all components except accumulator with pressure switch, evaporator core, and condensor. To make things difficult, the entire smog setup is also gone with the computer controlling nothing except the dizzy....and im not sure about that...lol There is no vacuum advance on it, and there IS however a wiring harness plugged to it. (computer controled? Centrifical?) ALL wiring harness connectors have been cut back damn near to the firewall, but the wires are still there in wire nuts and electrical taped. Holley 600 carb installed on an Edelbrock intake. Bosch Mechanical guages have been installed, and work fine for now. I did find a really nice and working Gauge cluster original to the car and will hook it up at a later date and reinstall all the senders for it. Im trying to SAVE this beautiful 3rd gen and need you guys help starting with the A/C.
I went ahead and purchased a new compressor, Brackets, accumulator, orifice tube, and new hose assembly....which are starting to be hard to find parts! What else do I need and how do I hook this mess up? Which color wires am I looking for and where in the harness do they come out? and what goes to what?...lol

Thanks for any help offered!

Mine did not come with ac, using a sanden (sp?) compressor I went ventage air. No ties to the computer and I'm running fine. Takes a big shoe horn but a gen IV magnum will fit
As for stock ac I have no idea.

I sure appreciate the reply. It seems noone wants to take on trying to figure this one out...lol ...Im figuring it out little by little with A LOT of research. Honestly it doesnt look like its going to be that difficult, and is definately cheaper than vintage air to go back stock . I really like the vintage air systems though...in the end, it was the cost that turned me away from them. Im almost 250 bucks all in with all new equipment except evaporator so far. Its the wiring it up that plagues me. I have wiring diagrams in front of me and im still>>>>

Re: Starting From Scratch A/C
Since the first post up there, I did pull the dizzy and saw that it was still hooked to the computer. The previous owner removed all the emissions goodies, A/C, and replaced the original q-jet carb with a WELL used, no choke, missing half the freakin linkages one, wrong geometry bracket for the 700r4 tv cable and the whole 9 yards. First thing I did was remove the worn out carb and stuck on a holley 600 and got the right brackets for the tv cable. I also am going to put in a vacuum lock up kit at a later date. Right now shes under construction and no lock-up in 4th gear isnt really that big of a deal until I decide to take it on a long trip. Im just surprised it didnt burn up the tranny the way he was running the tv cable. Also, I learned on this site that since the dizzy would never advance because the computer is throwing a thousand codes with all emissions removed and is surely running in "limp home mode" that an old school non CC distributer was in order and HAD to be done. Worked like a charm too. I now have perfect timing and working on the curve as we speak. lighter springs were in order and should give a little more ummph on take off. Once finished with all this Im going to tackle those 500 boxes of A/C parts sitting in the trunk!
