removing thermostat for drag strip and some weekend driving
hey guys i did a carb swap on my 91 z28 has comp cam 282 with profiler 195 heads. i build this car for drag strip and some weekend street run. my question is , will it hurt anything or cause problems if i remove my thermostat. i have a 160 degree thermostat and when driving after warm up i see the temp. go passed 260 degrees then the thermostat opens up. i would want to remove it since i don't want to hurt anything on the motor from when it rockets up to 260 degrees. what do you all recommend me doing?

Do you still have the electric fans or did you take a step back and go with a clutch fan?

Do you have some kind of controller for them or is the factory stuff controlling them?
Your T-stat opens at 160 but if the factory stuff controls them, the fans don't kick on an pull air through until its (1st) 220 degs and 2nd at 239.
Unless your going over 40mph, you don't have enough airflow until those temps. (fans shut off over 40mph)

You have another problem that taking the thermostat out won't fix.....unless its faulty.
If its hanging, then it could cause high temps.
As far as taking it out, it offers no performance advantage to do so.

If you still have the stock coolant gage then you could go to Harbor Freight and buy a $20.00 inferred temp. gun or take it to a garage and have them point one at the thermostat housing/etc. to see if the stock gage is off.
Above 260* you should be boiling coolant in the over flow tank.

Re: removing thermostat for drag strip and some weekend driving
If you are really hitting 260* that's WAY too hot. You are prone to cracking a head, block or blowing head gasket.
Risk of detonation is MUCH higher, etc.
Double check with a diff water temp gauge, temp gun, etc. If it checks out the gauge is correct and your at 260* then you have some major cooling probs you need to address ASAP.
The perfect temp range is in the 190-200* range. Myself I will shut mine down at anything over 225* even if i'm on the interstate or out in middle of no where. Too much money to risk the damage.
Now for the T-stat, I have never ran one in mine and it's been a daily driver all year long car for many years. You don't want to just remove the stat though as that can let coolant flow too past and not give it enough time to pick up the heat and carry it to the rad.
I use a Moroso 1" water outlet restrictor plate
My water temp stays around 185* in the summer.

If the fans are always on, like said above, you have other problems that need fixed.
Bad gauge, sending unit or something.
The fans don't need to be on all the time either.

Well I have the equus temp gauge. Once the thermostat opens up the temp doesn't go higher than 190

Re: removing thermostat for drag strip and some weekend driving
Are you sure the thermostat is not stuck closed?
Sounds like you hard wired the fans, double check they are turning the right direction and not backwards. If they are turning backwards the car will be OK when sitting still but will overheat when moving.
