Sounds pretty normal to me.
What makes you think it's running "hot"?

I agree with sofakingdom. Have you checked to make sure your fan shroud and lower air dam is in place? If your should is gone, it won't cool as if it had one. If air dam is gone on lower front, it won't cool as while driving.
Check that out. And with a lower temp fan switch.....if your fans are rigged to run all the time......No would be that answer.

Thanks so u dont think 235-240 is high? I jist put a new engine in the first week of driving never went pass 220 like the second or 3rd week is when temps started rising it never goes into the red though and the air damn and fan shroud are there and in good condition

Re: help pleaseee car running hot
Well getting up to 240 is kinda high. You said new water pump was installed??? Is it the right one for that engine as far as clockwise/counter clockwise rotation? Not sure, but I believe there is 2 types. Maybe somebody can chime in on this or do a search on it.
Where did the engine come from? year/model.ect?

Re: help pleaseee car running hot
The serpentine system on tpi cars 88-92 takes a reverse rotation water pump. The basics of the cooling system is when enough air goes across the radiator you get rid of heat. If you have a big enough radiator and big enough fan without losing air that should be going through the radiator core then the engine should be cooled. If your radiator is low on water then you will not be able to properly cool the engine. Make a check list. First I like to pull the right (passenger) front tire up on a brick to make sure the radiator cap is the highest point so the system will be full with no air. I like a 50-50 anti-freeze distilled water mixture with green anti-freeze and alsso two bottles of purple ice or water wetter. Check and make sure the fans are working when they are supposed to. Make sure the air dams are there and the air dams are sealed with the foam insulators installed at the sides of the radiator. Remember, it is all about getting the right amount of air across the radiator. I live in Arkansas and it is very hot here in the summer and I use a 170 stat and a be-cool radiator. An aluminum radiator with two, one inch rows of cooling tubes is the best design. Water wetter or purple ice (2 bottles) will help drop the temp 12 to 15 degrees.

Wow....im just wondering....wow...those temps are high....my roc will stay between 195-205....i run just plain ol water in the summer with a lil help from hyper lube super coolant additive...drops temp by 20*+ degrees....also using 160 thermostat...my roc does not like the high temp...runs better at lower temps...also have dual fans set up to a bypass toggle...(one day they just decided to not turn on automatically)..

Re: help pleaseee car running hot
"Normal" temps for these cars are 205 - 210°. Not particularly hot, but not, 1960s American Graffiti temp either.
Temp gauges are NOTORIOUSLY inaccurate.
What does your infrared pyrometer tell you the REAL temp is? Until you tell us that, all the rest is monkey-spank.

Re: help pleaseee car running hot
Does anybody know the name of the temp sensor or sending unit that the temp gauge gets it reading from?? The mechanic told me its located between #1 #3 plugs but when I try to look it up I keep finding coolant temp sensor

Re: help pleaseee car running hot
It's called an"Engine Temperature Sensor"
Your looking for one of these.Go to the parts store and tell them your year and model and engine size.
ours are a little different, but Auto zone or any parts store will stock it.

Car: 1988 Trans Am
Engine: 350
Soooo I need help with cooling as well
having a problem with overheating trans am. I have a 1988 Trans Am 350 V-8 that keeps overheating. Takes a awhile to heat up unless you jump on then it heats up faster but it still takes at least 10 minutes of driving before it even gets to about 205 degrees. But if you keep driving it starts getting 230 and even more. It has a 180 thermostat in it. No coolant leaking no water leaking, nothing is leaking. Had a different mechanic pull the heads and nothing is wrong? Has a 2 core radiator with only one cooling fan that runs direct as soon as you turn the key on. Water pump seems to be working just fine as well. Can't seem to think of any thing else that could be wrong with it. Have one mechanic that thinks the radiator is clogged because when he flushed the system out they found bars leak in the radiator. Really thinks theres nothing wrong with the engine but something wrong with radiator. So need help?
