Should I even bother?

Ok I put a post similar to this a little while ago. I have this car, the 1985 Camaro Sport Coupe, and it had AC but now does not since some ***clown removed it. Since I bought it from a state I could not visit and all the outward appearances where that it had AC. It was also a Tx car for 25 years with AC until it got to Michigan. I feel like such an idiot for buying it now. I looked on the internet and reinstalling it will be expensive. Should I just resell it, get what I can and get something with AC? I do like the car and that's the crappy part. What do you guys suggest? I'm so upset with myself for this. I knew better than to make such a foolish mistake.:mad

Re: Should I even bother?

Sorry to hear about this CrystalCamaro. What parts of the system are missing? We have cars being parts in the Metro area all the time...I would think things are similar in Philly. There might be some parts you'd want to buy new, like the drier, but the rest, good used parts might do.

Re: Should I even bother?

I was told after the fact, the guy before the one who sold it to me took out everything! I mean, really? I don't even have it yet and instead of being excited I'm depressed and angry. I'm going to probably have to unload it at a loss and start over. He tells me they make kits. Oh yeah? Not for 1985 they don't! I wish I never bought it now. Seriously.

Re: Should I even bother?

Depends on what's missing.

Usually it's not too tough or expensive to put back into working condition.

Hardest things to find are usually stuff in the interior. If that isn't hacked to oblivion, then the rest isn't too bad.

Re: Should I even bother?

Spend your time checking out local junk yards, it will take your mind off of it for the time being.

Local Upull/Pick-n-pulls will allow you to grab everything you'll need for a very reasonable amount. Another benefit is that you'll know how to install the system into your new car since you will have recently removed it.

If there aren't any junk yards around then you should be able to find a car locally on Craigslist.

Re: Should I even bother?

Thanks for all the input. When it gets here, I'm going to test the waters to see how bad it's going to be to replace it. With unmolested versions of third gens becoming scarce where I live I may just bite the bullet and fix it. If it's too bad I may have to unload it,get what I can and get another third gen with working AC.

I live in Philadelphia but I've been checking places. I did upload a picture in the exterior, body thread. It's white over red. I m hoping it won't be too bad. The car doesn't deserve to be junked or abused.

Re: Should I even bother?

Not sure if you are willing to travel, but I have an 89 with a working AC system that I plan on removing this summer just to clear out space and weight (since I will never use it). I'm not sure what they are going for these days, but I have no use for the thing once I get it removed.

Roll your windows down and hit the highway. Most efficient AC there is. Even better if you have T-Tops

the hardest parts to find are the compressor mounting brackets. everything else is readily available. im working on one now where some jack a$$ removed everything except the evaporator case. new condenser is $100 .new compressor is$120.used ac lines were $25 new receiver/dryer was $30. im trading labor on my local ac guys service truck for the R12 charge. bottom line is, its doable.AND not overly complicated/expensive. take heart. at least you didn't buy a ford!!

Re: Should I even bother?

This morning I'm feeling better somewhat. I slept on it and hearing that others are going through the same thing makes me feel better. I'm going to use it until it gets too hot and then just move it around for exercise while I get the money together. I've never really worked on a car before, and I got into the game late. However, I'm willing to learn and I bought a repair manual. I'm going to buy some other books and learn as much as I can. I should give the car a nickname for stressing me out. I was thinking Rust Bucket in a tongue and cheek way

Re: Should I even bother?

Just remember we are here to help you in anyway we can. Like the others have said, they are not hard to get parts for. If you cant get them, I am sure others can or may have parts for you to buy.
