Electric Water Pump Swap / Weight Reduction

My car is a street/strip car, I decided this winter to swap it over to an electric water pump to get rid of several brackets, reduce weight, clean up the engine bay, and hopefully drop a tenth or so.

Here is a before shot:

In the spirit of cleaning up the engine bay, I went with a new Alternator bracket. It is an Allen Grove piece, here is a shot of one:

It should be noted that a lot of aftermarket alternator brackets (including this one) do not work with the factory alternator, I wound up buying a Tuff Stuff 100 amp 1 wire alternator with a 6 rib serpentine pulley.

One more before pic:

Progress pics:

Driver's side serpentine bracket removed

Passenger side bracket removed:

Proform Water Pump mocked up:

Allen Grove Bracket Mocked Up:

Bracket Removed, heads painted, bracket reinstalled with alternator:

You can read more about my build here:

It should be noted that this is the stock L98 shortblock with a carb and vortec heads on it, the motor has never been out of the car and has 90k miles on it. You can tell the engine bay needs to be cleaned up. I am hoping to hit the 12's with this setup this season before possibly pulling the motor.

It should be up to the task for street duty, I will know soon enough. It isn't really warm enough out to give it a true test, but for the price and reputation the Proform seems like a good unit. You can also purchase replacement motors for it which is a big plus.

I snapped a few more pictures last night:

Re: Electric Water Pump Swap / Weight Reduction

do you happen to have a part number for the belt and bracket?
that sure freed up a lot of space. looks very nice too.
did you take your thermostat out? i thought i saw it was recommended?
did you just wire it to a toggle switch or what?

Looks like Alan Grove brackets. I run them on a couple of my cars.

Yes it is an Alan Grove 235R. Thanks! I went to a 165* Moroso thermostat but left it in, I read to take it out and put in a restrictor, and I read to leave it in, so I am going to leave it in and see how things go.

I put a relay in that controls the water pump, and have the relay activated on an ignition wire. I don't want to forget to turn my water pump on.

Re: Electric Water Pump Swap / Weight Reduction

I've thought about doing this as welll, so I can get rid of the serp brackets and just have alt and powersteering, but from what I read it's mostly for cars that spend more time at idle than they do at cruising speeds. The electric pumps have a set rpm, while belt driven have an rpm that matches engine speed, and also moves more water at certain rpm (can't remember specifically). So I'd be interested to see how it performs on the street.

Re: Electric Water Pump Swap / Weight Reduction

^ my 55 has an electric csi pump, it's old, they are csr brand now.

It kept my 11:1 BBC cool on the street with a deck radiator!

Re: Electric Water Pump Swap / Weight Reduction

Think it would keep a 500hp sbc with 11:1 with 3row aluminum rad cool?

Re: Electric Water Pump Swap / Weight Reduction

I don't see why not. You ever seen the radiator in a 55 chevy? It's a lot smaller then out cars, and a down flow design.

We bracket raced and cruised the 55 with it and never fad a cooling issue.
Had a 16" autozone electric fan and a 170 thermostat.
The BBC was pushing around 600hp.

I'm building a blower motor now, and am upgrading the radiator. But I'm keeping the water pump.
Mine is a 35gpm unit and is about 10 years old now.

Hell me too! I was leary of them because I kept reading about them dying so quick, guys have 2 and 3 of them in the garage just in case because of it. I was thinking the 5-10 HP wasn't worth the peace of mind. But if this brand is 10 years old and still running strong?! I need one!
