No air dam on my '91 'bird?

So, I wasn't entirely sure if air to the radiator is simply supposed to travel through the front nose/grille on my car, or if it's supposed to have the deflective air dam piece right under the radiator support, but I've noticed that my car does not have this piece on it.

Basically, I'm just wondering if this is normal or not on a '91? (And if so, why do so many people seem to remove air dams? ). If not, should I hunt down a factory dam, or look for an aftermarket one? Car runs steady around 220-225 at cruise. Get's a little higher before the fan kicks in at idle.

Current set-up otherwise is a stock single fan (TBI set-up), Champion 2-core aluminum radiator, and a newer high flow water pump. Looking into upgrading the fan, and installing a lower temp fan switch as well.

The air dam isn't as big as deal on the 91 bird. I switched front bumpers on my 92 to the 85-90 style and then it caused a lot more overheating. Still would recommend getting one though.

@ Firebat - Did you drive your '92 around w/out a dam? How much of a difference did the bumper covers make?

@ Edward - There won't be any pics for a little while, unfortunately. Last thing I was doing on the car was a little body work for hobby credit at a school. It isn't completely back together, and the quarter's out, so it's spending a month stored away.

Your car needs the air dam, end of story. Pick up a new one. 91 92 have different air damns than the 85/90, but I think the center part will interchange, just not the small parts on the fender gfx

Actually the 85-90 is a long thin 1-piece unit. 91/92 is a taller 3-piece.

There are 1 and 3 pc setups, not sure what cars got the single piece, but my 86 has a 3 pc setup, and so has every 85-90 I have ever looked at.

See...The problem is your "...so has every 85-90 I have ever looked at" whereas I can say the exact opposite.

For example:My 87 GTA & 89 GTA has the 1 piece as well as another friends 87 GTA one. But my 91 Firebird has the 3-piece.

I haven't found any real reason why. It almost seems random between the cars. Regional thing? Dealership choice thing? I dunno but neither would make sense on the production line. Was the 1-piece a 85-90 GTA thing? Who knows.....

In the end? Run what you want. They all seem to provide cooling from the Camaro 1-piece to the Firebird 3-piece. Apparently it doesn't matter except that why did GM make different versions?

Re: No air dam on my '90 RS

fixed wrecked 90 Camaro...put front bumper assembly off 88 Camaro...needed under radiator air dam so got two piece one off 84 Camaro...looks almost too narrow in middle to do anything...will this 2 piece do the job on my 90 Camaro?
