heat by my feet

hey i have an 85 iroc and when i drive it after awhile it starts to be warm by my feet, its not intense or anything but it does get the car warm after a minute. i have the heater unplugged from the blower motor so the heat isnt functional right now. could it be my heat shield is bad or something? btw I dont have headers or anything its all stock. any ideas would be helpful.

Re: heat by my feet

If you have dual cats, your heat shield could be rotted away or not there at all. Climb under and give it a look.

do you feel heat from the floor or do you feel heat blowing out onto your feet?

Re: heat by my feet

you only need to disconnect the yellow wire at the heater motor to stop it from blowing all the time.

Re: heat by my feet

i have my heater unplugged because i have my engine fan wired to my blower motor untill i get around to getting a new heat sensor. so i always have the slider on my control set to high so the fan will stay on.

Re: heat by my feet

If you feel hot air blowing on you, the first thing I would check is for holes in the firewall. It might be coming in through one of the little rubber grommets. Especially as the air under the hood heats up, expands, then looks for somewhere to go. At speed the hot air probably gets pushed through whatever gap is around the wires.

Pop the hood and take a look to the right and below the brake booster. In my 'bird there's a grommet right around there. I'm pretty sure my S10 daily driver has a similar issue blowing hot air at my feet. If I ever get around to it, I might cover the hole with some tape. Preferably silver with some heat reflective properties. You could also use clear silicone or just regular duct tape.

Re: heat by my feet

I have an 84 T/A and it does the same thing. I've done some research and asked a few questions as well. The best I've been able to determine, is that since the older cars don't have the heater bypass valve in the heater hose which allows warm water to constantly flow through the heater core. As air comes into the cabin through the fresh air vents it runs across the heater core and warms up causing your feet to get hot. How accurate this is, I don't know, but as I mentioned earlier, it'st he best I could figure out.
