AC Question

AC Question

Ok So my AC was fully rebuilt in 07 new compressor dryer accumulator etc. Anyway it ran good and such with Freeze 12 in it. Link below, (its a R-12 replacement). Anywho this summer the AC was bone dry, it cycled every 2 seconds. I put a can of Freeze 12 in it about a week ago and it cycles for a little but when the cars warmed up it stays on. My question is Freeze 12 is kinda rare these days and the AC isnt coming out as cold as it should. What would I need to do to get that can of freeze 12 out and change it to R134? I know it probably has a leak but dont have the money to fix it. Itll be easier to convert it and pick up a can at autozone every couple months for now.

Freeze 12 is one of those non blended refrigerants the manufacturers came out with as a drop in replacement to r-12. Problem with those refrigerants is the system holds 1/2 of the factory charge. You cannot use anything but a drop in refrigerant r-12 replacement as you will contaminate the oil in the compressor and cook the compressor. I would change and make the system 134a.

I have a question concerning refrigerant. I have R-12 in mine, I bought a can of refrigerant 12 with refrigerant charge, the oil charge, leak detector, leak sealer, so is this not compatible with my R-12 system? Mine works but thinking it needs a charge and oil treatment. Because it should be a little colder.

Freeze12 is 80% R-134a.....You might as well leave it in if you're going to do R-134a by itself. The other 20% is R-142b. My guess is that the creators of Freeze12 put the 20% R-142b in there so that it would retain some lubrication with mineral oil.

R-12 uses mineral oil.
R-134a uses PAG or POE oil.

Freeze12 tells you that you "can" keep using the mineral oil originally in the R-12 system. (no oil change) But that it's better if you switch to POE.....Do not however use PAG oil, as R-142b is not compatible with PAG. (R-142b is a HCFC and HCFC's will eat the system out with PAG)

Sounds like you need to get a leak detector or dye injected and find out where the leak is before you go any farther.

Freeze12 runs lower pressure than most systems. This means it's better suited for 100°+ weather than the 80-85° weather most places deal with. The kicker is that being an 80/20 ratio of R-134a and R-142b, it will run warmer than R-134a by itself, since R-142b is a warmer refrigerant than R-134a.

You have R-12 and bought R-12? Or 134a?

I have R-12 still in my car. I bought a can from a guy that said that the Refrigerant 12 was compatible with my R-12

I guess people missed my question here. What would be the easiest way to switch to 134 since its the most widely available refrigerant right now(any auto part store). I find it easier to switch and head the autozone and throw a couple cans in versus ordering freeze 12 or auto frost. Im basically doing it half *** until I get the proper cash to do another full rebuild

I would not put 134a in my system (it is new) 134a will eat your systen if there is air in it. You have to have it done by pro. Change all the O rings, dryer reciever and flush the system. I use es-12a with great results. You can do it yourself. In this florida heat my a/c puts 40* temp in the car. It runs at much lower pressures. Mine is 28 low 230 high. Just google it, The complete kit is about $48 to your door. I have done 4 cars with this stuff and can't say enough good things about it. It also does not go in a 0 vacume system and works with any oil.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I'm going to recharge my A/C again after a 4 year engine swap and I've been reading about autofrost, ES-12a, R-12, R-134, etc. all night long and I'm not sure what I need yet. Mine was working fine with R-12 when the 305 threw a rod 4 years ago and now that I installed a 350 in there I really miss my A/C. How's that ES-12a working for you after some time of using it?
