I'm not that knowledgeable about the a/c systems but know the basic of it. So this is my question. I want to use my R-12 freon but the car's a/c system is dry and it needs oil, and i read that mineral oil could be used as R-12 oil. When I was looking for it, Car Quest had an oil that is compatible with the R-12 and R-134a systems , its Car Quest Super Premium Ester Oil. When I was at Walmart i found some mineral oil at there Pharmacy department but its for an Intestinal Lubricant, and Skin Moisturizer. So I was wondering if I should use one of these or should I use something else?

How do you know the system is dry?

DO NOT USE the "mineral oil"!

I got a qt. Of R12 mineral oil at my local napa. Check the website. No one else local
seemed to carry it.

My system called for 6oz of oil. I put 2 in the accumulator, 2 in the condensor, and 2 in the compressor. I used a funnel and put it in before I vacuumed the system.

the car hasn't been use in 6 year and i placed a new shaft seal in the compressor and the compressor had no oil or no freon in it.

i check online and i found it at Napa and the website said the might carry it in stock. so i called them and they didn't know what i was talking about and told me if i was talking about Marvel Mystery oil

what about the ester oil, is it ok to use?

I do not know about the ester oil. I would stick with mineral oil. Give napa the part # from the website. If they can't find it for you, there are lots of places online to buy it.

r12 = mineral oil
r134a = pag
ester oil is for use when converting r12 to r134a because its supposed to be compatible with both pag and mineral, cause you will never get all the old oil out of the system.

that mineral oil should not be used in the a/c system. get mineral oil designed for a/c systems. i got a quart from my local a/c shop for $10.

If you're using R-12, skip the POE (ester) oil. It soaks up moisture way worse than mineral oil does.

cool thank you, one more thing how many cans does the car take 2 or 3. i have i like four cans and i just don't want to over do it. i cant find out how many oz it takes, i have the manual for the car to and it doesn't tell say anything about the A/C?

My car takes 2.25 lbs of R-12....Chances are the cans are 12 oz. So 3 of them.

Check by the blower motor/evap core that is where mine says how many pounds it takes.

You can also look up an Air Conditioning supplier and they carry freon related oils. And they know which oil goes with which freon. Look at freeze 12 for freon. It uses the same oil as R12 and is said to be slightly better than R12. Our coils are not properly sized for 134 but it does work but it is not as effecient as cars that are designed for it. Plus you have to change oils and a lot of hassle. There is a freon called hotshot that works very well I think it is 414B or 4 something that I used in the late 90s some. It would run you out of my 89 Z71 truck in August.

I had to replace compressor about 12 years ago; had system converted to 134. Then the low-mileage IROC was rear ended and totaled. Drivetrain currently going in '55 Chevrolet. Am just now mounting AC compressor, alternator, PS pump, etc and was going to add polyester oil as recommended. Should I just work it in to the compressor? The replacement compressor was an identical replacement, but not sure where to find out capacities for the systme. Though the car is going together, I am assuming it will be a couple years (and a whole lot of dollars) before it is ready to fire up. Any suggestions? By the way, thanks for a great site!!!

So is there a source for info regarding the stock a/c compressor? Or anyone out there service a/c auto systems? Just want to prep compressor with ester oil before mounting on engine. I was told 7-9 ounces is required.

Our cars hold a total of 6 oz of refrigerant oil.

To prep a new compressor, just pour some oil into one hole of the compressor while spinning the compressor by hand (out of the car).

To actually add oil to the system, you either pour it (before the pipes are closed up) into the accumulator or else inject it into the low side service port of the accumulator (after the pipes have been closed up)
