O-Rings

what size are the o rings on the ac compressor for an 86 camaro with a 305 TPI, the parts book doesn't say what size they are supposed to be.

Re: O-Rings

It depends on the compressor, and if it's ever been replaced. Some of them (older units) have an o-ring groove, and use an o-ring. Others have a flat sealing surface, and use a rubber/metal "sealing washer".
If you are replacing the compressor, don't worry about it. The replacement compressor should come with whatever is necessary to seal it up (washer/oring).
If you're not replacing the compressor, just take the old o-ring/washer to the parts store with you.

Re: O-Rings

its the r4 radial compressor, and I don't want to take them off and leave the system open for too long because it will gather moisture from the atmosphere.

Also when I do replace them what should I do, the system has some pressure in it but not enough for the compressor to turn on, I have plenty of oil to put in it so I will probably put 2 oz in because it looks like some leaked out, and then i will also put the new high side valve stem on at this time, and then have it recharged with r12, would this work, or would it have to be evacuated and all that stuff.

It is a good idea to minimize exposure to atmo, but IF you want to do this the right way, anytime the system is opened up, the accumulator/drier should be replaced, and the system should be vacuumed.

Why are you opening the system?

You cannot be certain if it uses orings or sealing washers until you disconnect it to see, but it most likely used the sealing washers. https://www.ackits.com/pc/CP3016/Che...her+Assortment Any decent parts store should be able to hook you up with both the orings and the sealing washers, and then you can return the one you don't need.

If the system is not already empty, you should take it somewhere it can be properly recovered. While you've got the system open, you may as well replace all the seals/orings. There are 7 total. 2 at the compressor, 2 at the condenser, 2 at the accumulator, and 1 at the orifice tube/evaporator junction. Something like this is usually helpful.

Re: O-Rings

well I finally got the o rings, the place I got them from said they are the same on all gm vehicles before 92 or something so they should be easy to get, don't get them at a gm dealer! I also replaced the high and low side valve cores for both of them it was 4.50 and at the gm dealer for just one it was 10 bucks. I got it charged and it worked okay, vent temp about 56, but noticed it leaking from a part on the compressor with 2 wires connected to it.

That is probably the high pressure cut out switch. It is held in with a snap ring, and it is sealed with an oring, as well. If it is like the ones I have seen, It cannot be removed while the system is pressurized (without blowing the entire charge).

Re: O-Rings

Well It looks like the entire compressor is leaking, so it won't have a charge for long, more info in my other post "compressor ???s"
