Question about CFM

So I have the 1989 Chevy camaro with the single fan its a 305 L03....anybody know the stock cfm? I think its 1350 but im not sure...Anyway i just ordered a permacool fan from summit that pulls 3000 cfm..Im hoping that this will help with my overheating in traffic...It gets to about 115 degrees here in socal... So oppinions? Will this help me out? Keep in mind she only overheats with the ac on...

Re: Question about CFM

My 12'' fans I have on my truck are rated for 1,250cfm. The 16'' fan, the only one that is wired up at the moment is good for about 1,400cfm and it is plenty.
I am going to put a stock V6 fan and a high flow thermostat on my car and that should be plenty of cooling. I also plan on taking my A/C junk out.

Cool bro didnt really answer my question though...Whats the temp like where you live? I assume since its a truck its got that big *** grill for the radiator so the fans have an easy time pulling.... You think this 3000 cfm fan will cool this 305 with the AC Running in 115 degree weather?

Re: Question about CFM

Imho, if 3000 doesn't cut it then the problem isn't related to fan capacity.

So then this fan shouldnt have any problem cooling this 305 with the AC running in 115degree weather? Also anyone know the stock CFM for the single fan on the 89 camaro?

Re: Question about CFM

That fan should be more then enough. If you don't think so you could all ways put a pair of pushers on the A/C condencer.
There is nothing wrong with cooling system over kill.
My truck has 4 electric fans total, 2 should have been enough but why stop there when you can have more.
I was going to put a pusher on the camaro along with the V6 fan but it shouldn't need it because I am going to pull the A/C condencer.
Here in this part of VA it gets upper 90's easy, and I plan to move back to texas at some point (part of the reason for cooling fan over kill on the truck). On another note I bought my Z28 in texas, for cooling it had a 19'' straight mechanical fan and a standard 195'F thermo. I think that fan is a bit of a fuel milage killer so its got to go.

Re: Question about CFM

So heres an update...Bought that new fan and it can keep it at 220 during stop and go on a 90 degree day...As soon as you come to a light it heats up to about 235...When she turns green and i get moving again it will cool back down to 220....The fan is wired to always run..... So heres the plan to fix this apparently the fan i bought is actually 2 inches shorter than the stock fan...which is 16" so im going to buy a new 16" fan with the same amount of cfm same manufacturer...Hopefully that will cover more of the radiator thus cooling it more and fixing the problem....Any opinions?

Re: Question about CFM

I put a heater core shut off valve in both my car and truck, so hot engine coolant can't bypass the radiator.
Are you using a fan shrowd to draw air over the hole radiator?

No there is no fan shroud...GM didnt engineer it with one...

Re: Question about CFM

Might try building one.
The guys on my diesel forum said that my 2 electric fans would never be able to cool a truck like mine. They are right, I doesn't take 2 I have only had one fan wired up.
I think the reason is my well made fan shrouds are helping the fans do their job.

Re: Question about CFM

i don't have the link atm but there is a aftermarket direct fit for your car with dual fans and yes if the fan u put in is actually smaller than your missing cooling some of your radiator and its not working the way it should
also make sure your have your system flushed to remove the build up inside your cooling system try a different thermostat maybe a lower temp rating
and make sure your radiator fins are clean as if u have too much build up it will restrict air flow through the radiator and not cool properly
----------
forgot i even had the link saved here is a link with replacement camaro cooling system "stuff" factory replacement and upgrades

Oh is that your camaro in that picture or just one u thought looked nice are those factory 15" chromed rims?
nice ride

i'm not really too sure about the cooling stuff thats on there but its suppose to be direct fit nething else i've seen from there or gotten from them has been perfect
i've still got my TBI 305 havn't gone too wild with performance yet just bolt ons so far so my stock cooling works perfectly except for a few weeks ago when my fan relay gave out

Yeah, Im not sure what the weather is like over there but her in socal it get to about 115 and the stock single fan system is worthless at those outdoor temperatures with the ac running...

Ok..So after testing this new 16" PermaCool 3000 CFM fan with the AC On she cant keep her below 240..So my next move is to look for a fan shroud for this thing...any ideas?

Re: Question about CFM

like someone else said, maybe this isn't a fan related issue. it's just a stock 305, even a junk yarded stock fan ought to cool it just fine with the ac on.

Have you checked to see if you have decent flow? Mabye the thermostat is stuck part-open... not open enough to allow the flow to move when at idle speed.

I would look at the thermostat before dumping more money into fans.

Its a brand new 160 thermastat...The reason i say its still air flow is because it will only do this when the ac is on...She will idle all day with the ac off..

Re: Question about CFM

I have the PermaCool 14" aluminum blade fan on my turbo'd 4cyl S10 and it will not cool it with a griffin aluminum radiator idling in traffic with the air on. The fan is junk basically. They get by rating them so high because that rating is achieved with no pressure drop in front of them (aka a radiator). I once found the specs under different pressure drops and can't now but lets just say air flow dropped quickly down to about 1400 CFM after a normal single core radiator was place in front of it.

Yeah those fans are junk...I ended up just pulling the perma-cool 16" that i had and replacing it with a single fan that came of a taurus man that thing pulls some air and dents the charging system but it keeps it cool in 110 degree weather down here with the A/C on...Overheating issue solved case closed
