Who made the original black canvas factory top in 1988?
Good morning everyone
I'm getting the itch to start working on my car again and want to replace my original black canvas top.
Does anyone here know which company made the original black canvas top with plastic window for a 1988 IROC ?
My car has the plain jane top without the nicer inner liner on later cars
Ideally I'd like to find an original genuine OEM top (probably none left), but hope someone here knows what the next best thing is....I'm a stickler for quality and details.
Also, should I avoid buying a top that's been sitting in a box for 20yrs? will it have permanent kinks that wont come out no matter how much the sun beats down on it?
Thanks !!

I bought mine years ago from Tops On Line with the glass window. I really love the glass and you wouldn't have to worry about kinks in the plastic as it doesn't have it.
Another thing is that I am not sure whether a 1988 would have had the headliner.

I was told that ASC actually sewed their own tops in house. So getting an OEM would not be possible unless you got some NOS, which I think are all gone, except for blue. The Material was originally Stay-fast IIRC

T-top350 bought an NOS ASC Blue top a few years back, not sure where he got it. Blue was for 1989 Firebirds, not sure if they used Blue on 1986-1988 Firebirds.
For 1989 Firebirds
216 Black,
100 Tan
10 Blue
were the 3 options for 1989.

I doubt an OEM top is available, and I would not use a top that's been in a box for 20 years.
On an 88 you probably have your choice between a one piece with plastic window, a one piece with glass, or two piece with glass. For an 88, my preference would be one piece with glass.
My 91 TA vert when I bought it last December had a brand new 1 piece top with plastic window. I'm going to have to live with it probably forever.
My 94 TA vert is going for a new top next week. It's a 2 piece top with a glass window and defroster.
Tops on Line or Robbins are great suppliers if you're doing it yourself. Stay away from Ebay. I would recommend "Stayfast" Cloth. and then the Chemical Guys Top Care Products.

The original tops were canvas and had white stitching. That’s usually how you can tell a top is original. Replaced tops are usually vinyl or all black with black stitching.
I believe convertible top guys can do custom tops and I think they’re made to order.
they might be able to do white stitching and plastic window which would match the original.

Re: Who made the original black canvas factory top in 1988?
Back around 98-99, I contacted ASC to see if there were any vert specific parts they had for sale to pick up. They advised me they had sold all of their extra parts to two places. One in CA in which I bought a new black tonneau (sold earlier this year on here) and one in FL in which I bought a new black canvas top. Both places advised me this was all they had left from ASC. Top is still in the box and has factory paper covering the plastic window. I've never put enough miles on my vert to need either, so I sold the tonneau. If you are interested in the top or want pics send me a PM.
