1989 ASC Convertible GTA resto project on eBay

This week.

Red/Gray w/ black top. Mileage discrepancy, but looks solid. FYI.

IT is on my list... Nice find. Can't believe no bids... My paint on my quarter caps and trunk/spoiler is doing the same exact thing.

What is the Odometer Discrepancy?

Red... Why did it have to be red? Good buy for someone who is colorblind.

VIN (Vehicle Identification Number): 1G2FW2180KL233200

1989 GTA convertible, Factory ASC conversion. This is one of 139 built with the 350 tuned port injection and automatic overdrive transmission. There is less than 30 with this color option I am told. The car runs and drives good. The tires are like new. No rust. The interior needs attention, leather seats, steering wheel and shifter **** need recovering. The radio and electric antenna works, along with the windows, door locks, cruise control and gauges. The odometer is not working and is at 92,600 miles. The radio controls in the steering whell are not working. The A/C system also is not blowing cold, the compressor cycles on and off. May be a freon issue. The convertible top and window are in good condition, not new but good condition. This is a nice, straight, rust free car that needs TLC, but would make an easy project for someone.

Re: 1989 ASC Convertible GTA resto project on eBay

The odometer cable is probably a big issue for people.. That means the speedometer doesn’t work and the Service Engine light is probably on. Won’t pass inspection..

New speedo cable is a PITA if it’s the same as an IROC..

I know people back in the day that would unhook the speedo cable so as not to accrue mileage. Car ran a little funny and SES light was on, but could tell speed by RPM. Always wary of that in these cars..

I knew a couple guys that probably had 150k miles but read 80k and would plug cable back in looking like they only drove 1-3k miles/year.. Needless to say they were in the used car business as well buying and flipping cars all the time..

Something like that causes confusion with pricing.. you’d have to see the car in person to assess the condition and still get a discount for the discrepancy.

Re: 1989 ASC Convertible GTA resto project on eBay

Not the Speedo cable, as Firebirds (with the gages) were all electronic speedos from 1986-1992, unlike the Camaro. It is a small gear inside the Odometer assembly. It takes a few hours or two to fix once you get the part. Honestly it seems that the part is part of planned obsolescence, as all the gears are made of nylon except for this one gear. This one gear is made from the softest, crappiest plastic on the planet. The biggest problem is the post the gear is on is actually crimped on, so you have to grind off the end, tap it out, and then press it back together, then solder it on. I should make a repair kit for them, with a new post and a new gear.

You can get the gear here: https://www.shapeways.com/product/KA...92-140mph-gear Or do what I did and make your own with a 3D printer as a small project.

What is probably the most amazing is I picked several clusters out of the junkyard, and clusters that have just sat for the past 15 years will mysteriously just stop working...

Re: 1989 ASC Convertible GTA resto project on eBay

That sounds awful.. I thought the IROC cable was a pain! On the IROCs the fitting that screws into the transmission would crap out but getting the new cable plugged into the back of the speedometer takes luck..

A kit for that sounds like a good idea..

I find GM still does that undortunately.. lots of power luxury accessories on high end vehicles are operated by crappy plastic gears that break and interiors that fall apart.. they want you to get fed up and buy a new one.. German and Japanese cars have higher quality in some of these areas.. love my 5.3 though!

With the Firebird, all you have to do is remove the IP from the dash and disassemble
