1986 ASC weather seal
Guys,
I'm restoring my 86 ASC convertible, and my tonneau cover doesn't have the regular seal that some do. Instead of the piece that attaches to the cover itself, mine has a seal that attaches to the body similar to the trunk weather seal. Any ideas what that strip came off of, or where to get it? I compared it to the trunk seal, and they aren't the same.
Thanks.

Ill have to take a photo later this afternoon, but basically, if you can imagine what it looks like with the trunk seal removed.. That's what it looks like when my tonneau seal is removed. A rail is a good way to describe it.

Re: 1986 ASC weather seal
I would not be surprised if it was not the same seal as the normal hatch seal, just trimmed to fit... I thought my 89's seal was on the body, not the cover... I will have to look when I get a chance.

Re: 1986 ASC weather seal
They probably hadn't worked out the kinks of the weatherstripping the things at that time so it's probably year specific. I know in 89 the weatherstrip isn't the same but it's also nowhere near perfect. I have had to adjust the tonneau cover weatherstrip several times. It gets stuck in between the tonneau and trunk. While not correct for your year I would just update to later year weatherstripping.

Re: 1986 ASC weather seal
I wouldn't mind changing to a later year, but I don't see how mine would seal, with what's available. I'm seeing the one that attatches to the tonnaue cover itself, but how would that seal to my body. Can I get a photo of what a body looks like where the seal is supposed to sit beyond my 86 from someone?

Re: 1986 ASC weather seal
You can use the newer seal if you use something like this on your pinch weld. That's what is used on my 89 and 92 verts.

As far as how much you'll need, since your car is apart, maybe, measure the length of your pinch weld you need to cover?

Re: 1986 ASC weather seal
I would take a tape measure and wrap it around the area you need... Add 1ft for good measure and then trim to fit when you get it.
When installing, I would not "pull" or stretch the seal, as it will want to shrink or contract. I would make sure it is tight fitting, as making it shorter is easier than making it longer.

Re: 1986 ASC weather seal
I've ordered it twice from my upholstery place. . 3 yards was too short, 5 yards was too much. I can't remember in feet how much it was short or long though...

Re: 1986 ASC weather seal
I just got my trunk seal in the mail today, and its pretty much the same as the seal for my tonneau cover, so I'm about to order a second one. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
