Looking to buy a vert. Need sum help guys.

Found a clean looking vert near the house. 89 Iroc Auto 5.0 motor. Owner just had a kid and said his biggest complaint is the noise from the top. I guess lots of movement and outside noise? Is this common? Told him to send me the RPO codes so I can do my research. What else should I look for? He said top was recently replaced. Car has also been repainted, but I think thay did a respray over most of the old paint? Seems like a good deal for 5500 $ I will know more soon when I test drive it. Any info would help guys.. THANX

Well I guess it depends on what the guy means by "noise." You can't expect a thirgen vert to be whisper quiet. I have a 91 Trans Am convertible and the few times that I did drive it with the top up, it was by no means quiet. It's not very loud, meaning it's tolerable but the thirgen tops just aren't very good in terms of that as far as I know. BTW how many miles does this car have? What shape is it in? Does it need any work? See if you can get him to drop the price a tad more.

Oh and take it for a spin and see for yourself how loud it is

Hey thanx for the reply. Yeah I'm definitley goin to take it for a spin. From what i can tell the car looks in good condition. Interior has normal wear and tear. It has approx 90K orig miles. As far as the noise I usually drive with my radio on and that overrides the noise? so Im hoping its tolerable. Man I always wanted a vert, hope its a steal. I know i can probably get it for less. Crossing my fingers!!!

Re: Looking to buy a vert. Need sum help guys.

the rattling u shouldn't worry about mine only rattled bad on bumps and potholes mainly the flip rod and the plastic trim on the top around release handles the top frame is aluminium so look around for wallerd out bolt holes and excessive wear just make sure and get the car fax before u make any serious decisions also keep in mind that it won't show incidents that were not reported check the consistency of the alighnment of the doors and all of the panels, floorboard is bad about rusting due to leaking ...that would be alot of money to pay for a car that would need major resto in a year or so... bottom of trunk lid under spoiler is almost always rusted

Re: Looking to buy a vert. Need sum help guys.

Personally i think 5.5K for a 305, auto, 90K miles is a bit steep especially in this economy. I'd probably offer 4K and slowly work up to a max of about 4.5K

Just for some reference, I bought my 88 iroc, 350, g92, 76K (100% orig, but the paint is rough) for $2900.

Good luck!

Re: Looking to buy a vert. Need sum help guys.

A person doesn't buy a convertible because they want a quiet car with the top up!
Seriously, with the top up my ride has no rattles unless you go hammering over a set of railway tracks. Also, anytime when the only thing separating your ears from the highway and the wind is a layer cloth (canvas), there's going to be more ambient noise. That's normal.
But to me, I didn't buy my vert to have the top up. It's always down when I drive. Only exceptions are if it's way to cold or raining. Then again, my car is only driven on "sunny Sundays".
I suppose when compared to other verts that might have a folding hardtop or an insulated and/or lined soft top, the '89 Camaro top would be a little louder, but again why buy a vert if the ambient noise with the top up is a concern?
I love my vert!
