It Happened!

Ok so I was at work this morning and my wife calls me... "Did you notice that someone broke into your camaro?" My heart dropped... "no", I replied "how did they break in?"
"They cut out your window."
...
Many profanities ran through my head. So She filed a police report and stuff the cop came out, tried to get prints blah blah blah. I filed a insurance claim and all that. The @$$ who broke in decided that i dont need a stereo, or anyt of the plastic he ripped out to get to it, and he also ripped the trunk lid open and stole my woofers, apm etc.... I guess what I am getting at is I have heard horror stories from friends at body shops saying that insurance companies will only pay to get a new window sewn in if the top itself wasnt damaged.... Is new window "sewn in" even possible or is it more feasible that they are going to replace the whole top? Is there any aftermarket suppliers for all the console plastics? Im headed out right now to get photos...

Re: It Happened!

Mitch,
Yes it is possible to have a new window sewn in, this this is what I had done a year ago in due to a similar situation. I'm lucky enough to have a 1st upholstery shop that's just a couple of blocks away do a new rear window for $250 and that included adjust the mechanism and generally tightening every thing up.

Judging by the pics, I can see why you'd want to replace the top.

Good luck!

Yeah its an older top still no rips or holes but not as black as it could be... Is there a manufacturer that makes a white top?

Re: It Happened!

Haven't heard of any white tops offered by anyone.

If you want to get a new top, why not get some estimates for replacing the rear window. Then use the estimates to ensure you get a decent $$$ from the insurance company and get a cash equivelant payout instead of the repair. Then use the cash towards your new top fund.

Really sorry to hear what happened. I had my SUV bust into for the stereo a few years ago. SUCKS bigtime! Good luck.

Re: It Happened!

Dumb question... was the car locked? If so, why?

There is nothing more valuable in my car than my top.

Yes the car is locked... It has a good alarm on it too... however about three days before the incident i went out to start it up and killed the battery. I keep tools in there while I am working on it here at the apartment and also I had a Dvd changer in the trunk with a screen in the reciever. I used to park it unlocked til i put the alarm on it with the proximity sensors and junk. the top was a little faded and all but it still is a huge bummer that any of this happened.

Re: It Happened!

I'm with Cadillac, in my opinion, "A convertible is saying please cut my roof open and steal everything you see" I for one purposly leave the hole in the dash for the stereo open and wires hanging out. so they see there is nothing of value in the car when they case it out. however I do have 2 ideas that I am working on in my little pea brain. one is a slide in mount for a stereo, the other is a hiden system??? any ideas out there? to help with this?

Those mothereffers! There's nothing more than boils my blood than low life, good for nothing, waste of air theives. They are the cockroachs of society. They should be systematically hung! Ok...sorry...just have had too much **** stolen from me! It has actually really affected me mentally because sometimes I'll even have dreams that someone has stolen my IROC. I'll wake up in a cold sweat, and run into the garage just to make sure she is there.
Anyway..I think the hidden stereo thing would be cool idea. Now that I am getting older, I don't need to have a booming sound system...just something clean and decent.

Edit...one other thing that has given me a peace of mind is installing a high end car alarm with pager. So if anyone even looks at the iroc with an intent to harm her, she will send me a signal, and Ill go running out with my 'attitude adjuster' in hand.

Re: It Happened!

ya nobody will steel from my colt 45 either, hey just an idea to have fun. get a electric fencer, one for about 10 miles should do the trick, (you want it hot enough to knock thier feet out from under them) . plug it into the wall ground one side, hook the hot side to your car's frame, then sit back and wate for a show. any way on the hiden idea, I have two places in mind. either under the seat or in the consol. the ideal situation would to mount the faceplate.... somewhere... say on top of the dash, or on the consol close to the window switches in plane sight with the rest in the trunk. I dont know? I'm open for ideas. I personally have an $800 Clarion that I bought specificly for the last Camaro I had (T-Top) but I am to chicken to put her in an "unsecurable" car

I think they would just go ahead and replace the whole top not just the window.

Re: It Happened!

As for stereo ideas. I have thought about getting an ipod or such device. Then installing a small 4 channel amp under the seat, and just plug the ipod in and play from it. No stereo, just a headphone jack and holder where the radio goes.

2nd idea. Some of the factory truck radios have a "cd changer" option. Then another company sells a device to where you can hook an ipod/etc into that and play. So your dash looks factory, but you get modern playability.

Re: It Happened!

3rd idea: Or use an FM transmitter on your ipod to play over your stock radio's fm dial. While the sound will be limited by the stock radio's FM performance, I do find that it still eclipses that of using Sirius or XM. The satellite radio providers use an incredible amount of dynamic audio compression that I find very annoying and the high frequencies are muddy. An ipod on an FM transmitter will outperform them in both ways. If you can listen the those, you'll be OK with this possible simple solution.

Thats what I have setup in my truck. The sound quality IMO sucks. But it is an option.

Re: It Happened!

I have an Iphone with sirius dl'ed straight to that. Much better sound quality than over the sat connection.

That blows about the car, I'd hold out for a new top and the frame reworked!

Re: It Happened!

I'd have to dissagree on the sirius sounding bad, I have a Clarion DRX945 reciever in my truck, with a Clarion Sat reciever connected. it sounds great to me, but you are talking about a few Frenklins to get in to that range of audio equiptment. In my opinion Clarion has the best audio processor out there, it has the clearist highs although it is not a bass thumper like Alpine. It does have a realistic bass which is good for my flavor of music.

Re: It Happened!

I say why not use a stock stereo add the ipod input then the wire in 2 amp's and replace the stock dash speakers with kick panels since round speakers sound better than 4x6's anyway then have a molded fiberglass box in the back with two 12's

Re: It Happened!

jstoltz you got me to thinking, and I had to test my theory. It works great, except for balance and fading. THE IDEA: get what ever amp, or amps use your RCA to 3.5 mm stereo cable plug into the amp as if you were using the cables from a head unit. connect to your speakers, and the volume on your IPOD or MP3 player (cell phone in my case) will control the volume. it is to stinking simple!!! you could use a splitter to connect to more than 1 "amp input"

**I run a cva1000 alpine in my car. Those stereos came w/a blank cover to put on when the radio is retracted back into its compartment. What i did was take an old cassette detachable face radio i had, take off that faceplate and screw it to the alpine cover, that way when someone is looking into the car (which rarely leaves the garage anyhow) they see an old cassette sony radio, or so they think. I even fashioned up a bezel to go around it to look legit and all. Never trust anyone, anywhere is the motto i always go by.
