She's NOT mine!! Dealer screwed me!

After years struggling with not modding my 94 25th Anniversary TA, it is now sold and I've returned to my real love, third-gens!

Of course I got spoiled on the convertibles so I just had to get one. I've got about $4k left over from selling the 25th, and first to go is the grey interior... Still have to fly and pick it up next weekend.

What do you all think??

Jamaica Yellow?
But of course! I actually had started out searching for a red one since there's not too many yellow TA verts out there. When someone emailed me saying he knew where one was but I wouldn't want it because it's yellow I about crapped my pants..

Wow, don't check the board for a day and all hell breaks loose..

Cure: Any f-body clubs up near Jackson? I've got a friend up there I need to see and might want to meet up one night..

Nikh: 92 (only year for Jamaican yellow), 305 (of course), auto (6-speed is on top of my list), drum rear (also on top of my list).

Previous mods: none! Just the way I wanted it. I want to do all the molesting! They only thing not stock is the cd player, but the orignal is in the trunk (if it works I'll sell it and have more fun funds)..

I got it for a little bit under $7k.. With tax, tag, and ticket I'm at about $7500..

It has more mileage than I wanted, but looking at the carfax report, most of it has to be highway miles. Original paint and everything checks out. I basically told the guy I was getting a return ticket and he might as well tell me every little thing about the car.

John: Yeah you got the black interior. That would be easier on my part, but oh well. I'm going to go ahead and go with a 4th gen interior in black. I almost bid on the one you missed out on. The 19,000 mile yellow/black/black 5-speed.. The guy that bought it in Detroit is getting a divorce and thinning his lot. It just sold on Ebay for 12K! (I would have paid $11). There's one on there now that needs some help and it's all ready over $1000. Makes me feel better about the deal I got.

Here's an engine pic, anyone want to guess the mileage?

Yep, I too have a 4th Gen Back ground, but LOVE my 3rd Gen! I have a drop dead beautiful 96 TA WS6, Built LT1, consistant show winner but there is somthing about that 3rd Gen convert that the 4th gen just can bring to the table.

I found my yellow TA about 3 years ago but did not buy it. It was at a used car dealer in South Atlanta and I had the price down to about $4,800...but the wife threaten to go on strike if I bought it so sadly I had to pass.

Fast forward to last Oct and I find this yellow TA on a chezzy used car lot in Macon, GA. I drive the one hour south to look at the car only to discover it was the same car exact car I wanted back in 2000 but could not buy.

I bought this one for $5,500, with 113,000 on it. Carfax tells me Im the 5th owner. Since I have purchased it I have began restoring it. Ive put in a new Jasper replacement engine, New suspension (Shocks, ball joints, bushings, etc) new interior from the carpet, seats, and every thing you can touch. Just put new Goodyears on it last week and had it aligned. It drives like a new car.

I have about $10K invested at this point and its worth every penny! Next on the list is a high quality paint job. I plan to have the motor removed and the engine bay repainted, clear coated etc.

The car is driven daily and now has 121, 000 miles on it. I drive it about 100 miles a day. I plan to drive it everyday for the next year or two and then relagate it to show and shine duty.

I took it to its first show (Southern TA Regionals) in Ft Walton Beach FL 3 weeks ago and it had quite a lot of interest....and snaged 2nd place in its class. Not bad for a car that one year ago was setting on some used car lot and likly one owner away from being junked.

Check this link out for details about the Gathering here in Atlanta.
The Gathering Website

There were about 200 Birds and Camaros there last year. Its here in Atlanta which is not too bad of a drive from Jackson.

Im might be interested in your orginal radio Cassette or CD?

Actually, Badbowtie is little low. The car has 84,000 on the clock.

Just got through ordering my first mod last night. Ground-Control adjustable springs all around and a set of Koni's, Yellow of course

The gathering is a little close for me to make it this year I think. Definetly planning on busy year next year..

I honestly have no idea what the orignal radio is, all I know is it's in the trunk. If it's cassette it probably works and was replaced for CD. If it's a CD, it probably doesn't work.. But then again, why keep it?? I'll test it out before it goes on the market.

That's an awesome car, I've always loved yellow cars! I really wish there was a club in the Jackson area, but oh well. There's actually 2 red 'verts in Clinton, believe it or not. I've got a 92, and another guy has a 91. By the way, welcome back to the Third Gen. community!

GREAT LOOKING CAR!!!!!!!!

MAN, You got lucky on that one.

Good Luck and keep us posted on what you do with her...

There are Three thirdgen Verts in Albany GA. All of them are Camaros no Vert Birds here. I've seen the cars but not met the owners. There is a red RS in very good shape, a White IROC that is a bit ragged but not too bad, and my reclaimed '90 RS. Like JWKbride's car, my car was one owner away from the boneyard. Sorry guys! those third gen vert parts are still rolling down the highway.

I've loved this weather lately. I don't drive my vert every day but I have driven it to work everyday this week. Top down to work, top down at lunch, and topless home!

Good luck with the Yellow Bird!

25th T/A

A fellow 25th owner! Id love to hear more about your old 25th. I am actually keeping a registry of them. What options did your car have? (Roof, Radio, Trans).

Congrats on your new Yellow Bird, I think it looks great. The 4th gen interior and 6 spd. will really set it off. Good luck w/ it.

I am a bit confused though, you would rather mod a car that was one of 35, than a 25th?(1,750 coupes, 250 verts, various breakdowns)

Dan,

Car was a convertible, CD, mandatory A4, no traction control, and #1837. The modding vs rarity can get a little heated.. As I found out when I was selling my car, if it's over 15,000 miles you might as well mod the damn thing. Mine had 70,000 when I sold it and it was all stock. No one wanted to pay what I really wanted, and all the low millage ones would go up to $6K over what I wanted and still not meet reserve. I could have got what I wanted if I had put $5k of parts into it..

That said, I consider the 25th 'package' special and worthy of keeping stock. Mine was 1 of 250 and a rare package deal. I don't consider paint color only something worthy of keeping stock. Yes its nice to say "it's one of 35", but even nicer when you make it your own. And as I learned from my 25th, this one has 84,000 miles and I might as well mod it because it's never going to be in a condition to be be a collector car. Now had I gotten the 19,000 mile version of it that had the black interior and manual that I wanted, it would probably just get bolt-ons.

To each his own I suppose, but I wanted a 92 TA vert, I liked the yellow, and it's not a 'package car' that has to remain a 'package car' to still be rare. As long as I never paint the car a different color, it's still going to be 1 of 35 yellow ones.

Well said!

I understand your point now. I agree the 25th market pretty much sucks right now. Fortunetly mine is not going anywhere.

I have car # 1901, and it currently has 12,xxx miles on it. Hardtop, auto, CD. (one of 68 w/ those options)

Please keep us updated on the progress w/ your vert.

Yep Im in the same boat but just on the oppisite end this time. My 96 WS6, was one of the first Ram Air TA's off the assy line. The factory clear coated engine bay is a hint that I was to be used as a photo shoot car and may have been for all I know.

In 96, WS.6s were pretty uncommon and about 2,000 were made. Ive mod'd the heck out of that car. Chrome, suspension, Wheels, Brakes, Heads, Cam, gears, etc. Ive even put White Leather interior in it from a same model year convert. Its a real head turner with 366RWHP, thumping cam and GMMG chambered exhaust.

On the other hand my 92 Yellow TA Im taking a more conservitive approach. Keeping it stock on the outside with maybe headers and the intake polished out.

Can't agree with your assessment more. Low miles and rarity make a car that is destined to be collectible more collectable for now. My guess is when the 92 or 94 is 20-25 years old if its in great shape (frame off restore or similular)) it will bring a good return irrespective of miles.

The thing with the Factory sticker'ed converts is that there were not many made to begin with +- 1,100 in 91/92 So no matter what the color is if you own a 3rd gen vert is collectable now and even more so in the future. Being yellow, just adds icing to the cake. Seeing 3rd Gen Verts is pretty rare to begin with

No matter what you do, its a 3rd Gen Vert and will turn heads stock or modded.....Im happy for you and look forward to meeting you at a show here in the south some time in the future.

Well, I left to go get the car yesterday. 5:30 in the morning..

I get up to Indianapolis about 10:30 and the driver gets me over to the dealership about noonish. I am immediately not happy. It's obvious from the road there's issues with the car. The bottom side of the front fascia is falling down, half of the air dam is painted yellow (with a nice paint line). Now I get up there to start looking at the car.. Keep in mind that I told the salesguy that I had a return ticket and he needed to tell me everything about the car, everything! I was told the car hadn't been repainted, the only flaws in the paint was a 6" square of bad clearcoat and a 'couple' of rock chips..

So here's what I find:

At least the front and rear bumpers have been repainted.
Most of the inner fenderwells are down to primer because of so many rock chips.
There's at least 20 chips and paint defects down the sides of the car.
The whole bottom seal of the top is curling up and doesn't seal very well.
The top of the doors have faded to a pale yellow.
The rear spoiler is faded down to primer.
The top of the rear bumper near the taillights doesn't even have a full coat of paint on it.
Both rear wheel wells had new undercoating.
The upper dash wasn't attached and the speaker grills were popped out.
The door sill and various other plastics were cracked.
The under dash panel on the drivers side was in three pieces and package taped back to the dash!
The entire engine has been out of the car, or at least broke down enough to paint the oil pan and block ORANGE!
Oil leaks, rust, etc..

Needless to say, I told him I wasn't happy and he immediately went on the defensive. "Look I'm no dummy, I know when a car's been painted, I answered all your questions honestly. I told you about all the paint stuff. You said you were swapping the interior so I wasn't concerned with telling you all of that, it's a good price for this car, what did you expect??"

Wait, it gets better.

So I ask to be taken back to the airport and I'm waiting in the office. The owner of the car lot comes out and is just shocked I would fly out and not buy the car. "What's wrong with it?" I begin to tell him everything and he starts in, "It's a 12 year old car. It's in excellent shape for being 12 years old. How can you expect it not to have problems like that." So I tell him that I asked about those problems and was told it didn't have them. Then he says, "What's the biggest problem with the car?". I tell him that it looks like it's been repainted. His reply? "Of course it's been repainted, you can't expect a 12 year old car not to be repainted. Hell, we repainted the back bumper ourselves!"

So I had to ask him why they repainted the back bumper, "Well the car was rear-ended and the bumper was just hanging there, so we had to fix all that". The salesman joins in now saying that he didn't know any of that. I'm trying to say that if the car lot owner knew that the sales guy should have know that. The owner then says that he's friends with the owner and the salesman has only been there for 90 days and shouldn't be expected to know that.

Then the ULTRA FIRM price, no negotiation dropped another $1000. Nope, no deal. So they took me back to the airport. I changed my flight around and got back late last night.

So now I'm out about $900 on the deposit and plane tickets, all because they figured if they got me up there far away I would buy it. They just couldn't believe I would lose money and not buy it. I basically told them I would be better off losing $900 then losing $7k in a crap car. I'm just glad I decided against paying $800 to ship the car. Then I would really be pissed.

I will definitely be creating a webpage about these crooks and will be getting the word out. If everyone wouldn't mind, everytime shady car dealers come up, let people know the CAR NATION in Lafayette, IN are nothing but LIARS and CROOKS.

Side note, I'm still looking for a decent 91/92 TA Convertible in Yellow or Red that's not on Autotrader.

Thanks,
Kevin D.

Dang Dang!

Kevin,

Sorry you had to go through that. I can certainly imagine how you felt seeing the car after all the buildup and anticipation of getting a good deal on a sweet ride.

I hope you find the car you are looking for.

I feel sorry for ya. I can only imagine how excited you must have been only to be let down. In the end you made the right call.

If the car was $5,500 like the one I bought, then you can overlook those issues because you can fix them and still not be too far out of budget. There are some really nice verts out there if you look hard enough.....and Im sure you'll find what you are looking for.
