Help restoring '88 IROC Convertible

Hi there,
After a lot of searching I finally found my IROC 'vert. It need some TLC but overall it's fine. I had to import it since I live in Puerto Rico and finding IROC 'verts here is nearly impossible. Anyway, when I got the car, the cable and release handle for the top were gone. Never having seen one up close, I'm not sure what I need to do to get to work properly again. I am able to put to top up and down by moving the latch holding the pin into the rear manually either though the trunk or the rear seat I was wondering if anyone could provide some pictures of this mechanism so i have a starting point. Also, I'm trying to find the parts for this. I can't find the handle and/or cable anywhere for the '88. Hawk's Third Gen Parts has the 89-92 one. According to them, this will not work. I'm inclined to believe them since they know more about this than me. However, if I can't find the 87-88 part, could someone tell me if it would be possible to modify the 89-92 to work? Thanks to everyone at Thirdgen.org Because of you, I've been able to get to work on a lifelong dream.

Re: Help restoring '88 IROC Convertible

I can help with any pics you need of my '87, but I'm unclear exactly what pics you need.

.... the cable and release handle for the top were gone.

Are you talking about the manual release cables, one per side? Is the release handle the slide lever located on the driver's side tonneau?

I am able to put to top up and down by moving the latch holding the pin into the rear manually either though the trunk or the rear seat I was wondering if anyone could provide some pictures of this mechanism so i have a starting point.

I assume a pic of the tonneau underside, showing the linkage for the release lever is what you need. Please confirm.

Also, I'm trying to find the parts for this. I can't find the handle and/or cable anywhere for the '88.

Good luck. None of these pieces have been available for years and no one reproduces these either.

Thanks for the reply. I was afraid I'd been unclear. The handle to which I refer is the one that release the pin attached to the rear of the convertible top and goes into the little hole on the tonneau cover. And yes, it's the one on the driver's side above the rear speaker or thereabouts. That is one of the pictures I need. You are correct in that I also need a picture of the mechanism, the way the cable is routed from the above mentioned lever/handle to where it actually releases the top. Thanks again for the help.
