Plug and Play Replacement for 1987 LG4 E4ME
I've done a search but can't turn anything definitive up:
I'm fairly handy but carburetors are a whole new beast to me and I don't want to go near mine. My mechanic recommends I get a replacement since I'm still rocking the original E4ME and it's getting tired. I've looked around and see several vendors advertise plug and play units, but search results indicate that these are mostly all junk. I want to keep the car as original as possible so I don't want to go aftermarket with a new intake and a whole bunch of adjustments. Is there any company that makes a good drop-in and turn the key E4ME? They are unwilling to rebuild the carb and I don't want to touch it myself. It's leaking all over the intake and needs to be retired. Thanks!

If it’s leaking from both sides of the carb, all you likely have is either a bad float, or a sticking needle/seat. Went through this last year with my sons ‘87 305 El Camino. O’Reilley sells a brass float for about $15, and a rebuild kit is about $30.00...which DIDN’T come with a float of any kind.
I realize this isn’t what you were looking for, but most “rebuilt” Quadrajets, which is probably what you’re ultimately going to be looking for, are generally worse out of the box than what you already have on the car.

Set aside a couple of hours (thats pretty generous) and perform a rebuild with a kit. There's a guy on youtube named tyler who does a lot of quadrajet rebuild videos, they are excellent.
There isnt a huge amount to these carbs and they seem more complicated at first until you get in there.

Sean Murphy Induction,Has electronic and non electronic carbs.not a huge wait time,don't have to mess with tv cable mounts and brackets.

I've looked into this a little bit and it seems pretty advanced for the E4ME. It looks like I'll need to take dwell readings which I've never done before as well as measure the voltage going to the various sensors to ensure they're accurate. Is this something I'll have to do even if none of the electronics are being replaced?
Or just rip all that off and put on something like the FiTech conversion kit and run EFI.
If you want to keep it original then you need to find a shop that can and will do a proper calibrated rebuild or you will have to learn to do it yourself. You can't keep it original and elect to do neither of those options. That is the technology you are dealing with - it is old and the expertise to work on it is largely gone from the auto repair industry. So you either learn it yourself and buy the tools like most of us do, or you pay big money to a shop that can do it or is willing to charge you to learn how to do it. That's the situation with old cars - we all deal with it.
