It's practically tear gas..
My old motor lost compression so I swapped in another 305, a vortec from a 00 van.
160k miles, stock cam, street warrior intake, brand new quick fuel 600VS slayer, headers with straight pipes side exit..
This thing is running pig rich at idle, burns the hell out of my eyes!
Stock jets are 68/72, I changed to 64.
Idle screws have no effect, but it will idle at 800 just fine.
To me, sounds like I need bigger idle air bleeds?
I also noticed something odd. Taking vac readings, with pcv, brake booster and dizzy hooked up, it was drawing a solid 4hg at idle.
Unplug pcv and take vac readings from there, it now flutteres 13-16, other vac accessories make no difference. Still runs just as rich.
I'm fairly certain my pcv is bust, feels like its always open..
What would cause something like that to happen though?

Did you set the float level? Is fuel coming out of the squirters? Brand new carb i suppose we can rule out the pv and clogged air bleeds. Where are you measuring vacuum? Whats your timing and fuel pressure set at

It was timed when motor was out of car by rotating cyl1 to TDC (looking through spark plug hole) with both valves closed, then stabbing dizzy in car. Retard till it would stumble some, then advance till the same, then put it right in the middle. My acc brackets are in the way of the timing tab, so I can't get a timing light on it. However she cruises fine, just idles high and slightly rich.
I leaned it out some by closing the secondary transition slot to .010 and upping air bleeds to 73 from 71.
Fuel pressure is 6lbs. Same pump as when I had the holley.
I'm sending this carb back anyhow, the choke isn't working properly..
Along with smaller idle feed restricters, I just learned they're much bigger on this carb than the holley 600's, which are stock at .30, quick fuels are stock at .35, so I'll switch some .32's in the new carb.
Still can't get the idle down though. What I did notice is that with the pcv plugged in (stock new pcv for a 2000 van), it'll idle 1100 (if I hold the fast idle cam down), but unplugged from pcv and the port capped, it'll drop down to 900, thinking my pcv might just be flowing too much air. Maybe?

Just a few degrees off on timing can make a big difference on how she runs; I'd do what's needed to get it timed with a light.

New carb just went on, .032 ifr instead of factory .035, 8.5 PV, stock jets and air bleeds. It idles high again, but not nearly as fat. So, I completely closed the secondaries, and whaddya know, it would idle at 400 if I let it!
Adjusted to 900, mixture screws do something for about 1 turn..they're set half a turn out. Choke on this one works too.. Set fast idle at 1400. As soon as I take off, it'll idle back at 1100, so I need to close my secondaries more, and tune out a stumble.
