Edelbrock for christmas

I got a great gift from my gf's dad. A shiny new edelbrock 600 1405 model. I guess he likes me! I'm stoked to go home and install it!

This will be replacing the Holley 750 that the po installed. The engine is a gmpp 350 crate. Po did not have the engine specs. Hopefully this will lean out the motor a bit. It gets old smelling like raw fuel every time I drive the car.

Pics to come. Somehow I got dragged into going to see a movie with the gf today. :-/

If he's a car guy then he doesn't really like you.

Easier to fix what's wrong with the Holley than put a whole different carb on it.

He just doesn't want his daughter in a broken down car with you in it. I'm surprised he didn't pay for someone to fix your car instead of having you continue to butcher it.

Re: Edelbrock for christmas

Wow. Not the positive supporting response that I was expecting.

I wasn't trying to knock the Holley, but I just have no idea on its past. I'd rather put something new and reliable on the car so I don't have to worry about getting stranded.

Anyhow, thanks for the constrictive feedback. It wasn't rude at all.

Re: Edelbrock for christmas

I think the guys were just busting your chops with a little bit of sarcasm. But, the problems with the Holley may not have been carb related at all. If that's true, then the Edelbrock wont fix it. Get the new carb on and let us know how it runs.

And I would say he likes you...LOL

Re: Edelbrock for christmas

Get the rebuild kit for your Holley.
Use the Edelbrock.
If you are not satisfied with the Edy, put the Holley back on after rebuild.
If you like the Edy, sell // trade the Holley.

BTW, if you smiled with glee & drooled, gf's dad knows you only have eyes for the gf & only drool for cars // parts!!....LOL

Re: Edelbrock for christmas

I've tried rejetting the Holley and the car runs really rich regardless of what I do. I've always run fuel injection in the past and am newer to the carb world. All my family and friends swear by the edelbrock. I'm excited to get it installed after this snow storm ends.

I intend to have it rebuilt. I've got a 327 out of an impala in the garage that I'd like to build up and use down the line in some future project.

Check the fuel pressure and float levels.

You've already got the Holley connected, and the DP is a much better carb than the Edelbrock. Other than that, it's the same effort to get either carb properly tuned.

Re: Edelbrock for christmas

Right on. What is an adequate fuel pressure level for either carb? I don't believe there's a regulator on the car. I should probably look into putting one on, eh?

Appreciate the help.

Re: Edelbrock for christmas

Pressure isn't important as long as it's not too much. A carb won't tolerate much more than 6 PSI before it floods.

Re: Edelbrock for christmas

Did you swap in the carb motor? Fuel pressure regulation is one hurdle. Another is the distributor. You can't use a stock "ECM controlled" distributor with a carb. Either of those items will really make the carb (either one) perform horribly. As for pressure, 6psi is a good place to be.

Re: Edelbrock for christmas

I did not do the engine swap and I don't know too much about the history of the engine or the parts on it for that matter. I bought it off a kid who was selling it, he inherited the car and didn't know anything about it. His dad did the work (or so i was told).

I believe the car came stock with a stock carb motor. Would that negate there being an ECM controlled distributor or do i sense an MSD box in my near future?

Re: Edelbrock for christmas

If it was built for the US market, it had computer controlled timing.

Re: Edelbrock for christmas

Take a picture of the distributor and post it so we can see if it is the computer controlled type or not. Maybe whoever did the swap knew what they were doing...or maybe not. It's always a crap-shoot when you buy someone's project.

He's a mopar guy. Hell, their whole family drives dodge. I'm cool with it as long as I can walk away from his charger. I'll get pics tomorrow of the distributor.

Thanks again guys.

Re: Edelbrock for christmas

Ok i snapped some pics with my phone before I left for work. Sorry about the funky iphone lighting. You can see where the fuel spills over from the carb and all over the intake manifold.

When my Holley did that, the primary float was set too high (gas actually poured from the sight plug). Once it was adjusted correctly, all was good.

BTW, my 350 HO Deluxe came with a vac secondary 4160 too. In doing some tuning I found that the spring included in that package was black--way too heavy for my car. I ended up with the long yellow, IIRC.
