Need help!

87 camaro lg4, r700

So I decided to install my headers, which inspired me to remove my smog and A.i.r. stuff. ( I don't care about emissions). The car is a weekend driver, and I'm looking to heavily modify it.

Question 1. What vacuum hoses are required to run my cc q-jet?

Question 2. I have a vacuum controlled HEI distributor that I want to install, do I have to wait till I have a non computer controlled carb or can I just install it?

I did a search on this stuff but every topic just ended in a stupid emissions debate on if it's its worth it to remove.

I'm in the same boat with you. I've built a 350 to replace my anti-theft device (non-running 305) and I was hoping to retain the Quadrajet (I even bought a spreadbore intake for the Vortec heads) but it is an electric '86 model. I'm going to use an Accel mechanical/vacuum distributor, but I really don't want to use an aftermarket carburetor if I can avoid it.

Re: Need help!

Slow87, there's nothing wrong with the cc qjet and distributor. In fact, the q jet is the best carb for your application. Installing a new distributor and carburetor will likely show no difference, everything else remaining the same and assuming nothing is wrong with your current carburetor. Everyone is too quick to rid the quadrajet but it produces equal or more power and gas mileage to an aftermarket. What are your heavy mod plans?

The line/hose to the manifold vacuum sensor, power brake booster, choke pull-off (aka, "vacuum break"), and if you have a snorkel air cleaner, the one to the thermovac servo. You can/should also retain the charcoal canister lines. If you retain EGR, that one.

Can only use it with a non-computer carb. If you use it with a computer carb, the carb will be in full rich mode all the time.

Re: Need help!

Thank you five7kid!. For all the sensors that are just dangling off the wiring harness, what do I do with those? Do most people tuck them some how or just cut them off?

If you're talking about staying computer controlled, you leave them.

If you're talking about going all non-computer, you either remove the ECM harness as a whole, or coil & stow - don't cut anything.

Re: Need help!

Just tuck the pigtails for the AIR control back into the harness somewhere. Don't cut them.

I'd keep EGR. It will help reduce pinging at light throttle tip in from low speed cruise allowing you to run more base timing.
