q-jet running rich, punch it and it bogs,

Rebuilt q-jet, setting may to be high. its good on gas and all that and if i gradually wot it goes but if i punch it it bogs, even if i hold the brake and bring the rms up and release the brake and wot it bogs. so too much fuel.

question: the two adjusting screws on the bottom front fix the problem? or do i have to open it up and maybe see if the float is too high?

Is your choke pull-off and its linkage to the secondary flaps on the passenger side of the carb functional and intact? Without it, the air valve opens too fast and causes a bog. Also, there's a tension adjustment on the doors that could be set too loose. This guy does a pretty good job explaining it.

Yes they are intact, when we first pulled the carb apart there were extra metering rods or pickups lying on the fuel bowl, they may have fallen out again, i'll have to check now, if i take the air horn off do i need to get a new gasket kit or do you think the one that was put in 3k ago will still be good?

Re: q-jet running rich, punch it and it bogs,

Ok, so first thing I did, i checked my secondary Air Valve: LOOSE! wouldn't even spring back, so i tighted that little screw behind the bracket of the damper to give it back its spring, took about 4-5 turns and i tightened the damper screw about half a turn. Now when i punch it no longer goes Blah! putt... putt... Now it takes off but sputters a bit. Do i still continute turning it even tighter till theres no more sputter? i think maybe 5 turns is alot.

It should snap back on it's own, but not loose. Too tight and you'll damage the spring that you're tightening. Turn it just a quarter of a turn each time and check it. that's how I did it.

Re: q-jet running rich, punch it and it bogs,

The stock setting for the AV tension is around 1 turn from just holding the air valve shut. Start from there and increase as necessary.

Re: q-jet running rich, punch it and it bogs,

Rich = the plugs at the bottom of the fuel well leak (dissimilar-metal corrosion)

Bogs = secondary air valve set too loose; tighten it up to about 5/8 turn for a 350 or 7/8 turn for a 305.

Re: q-jet running rich, punch it and it bogs,

So after setting my secondary air valve, i go out this morning and find my secondary air vavle is loose again, is the spring shot? it tightens up - works then overnight it loosens? I borrowed the mixture screw tools from a guy at work along with a vaccum gauge, set my mixture screws to 20inch/lbs of vaccum, runs good now though i have to keep setting my secondaries if the spring is shot

Re: q-jet running rich, punch it and it bogs,

Sounds like you need to tighten the little Allen set-screw. (after properly setting the tension of course)

Re: q-jet running rich, punch it and it bogs,

Its under the tension screw, perpendicular to it. Here's a picture i found on google that gives you the idea. From what I understand you loosen little allen screw while holding the tension adjuster with a screw driver, set the tension then tighten the allen screw to lock it before letting go since the spring may wind back the screw and undo your adjustment.
