83 Z28 Choke Light Question

So, I just took delivery of this 83 Z28 today. It drives great, starts right up, etc. But the choke light stays on. I did search and found the 2 common ailments are the alt and the relay. Would the choke still continue to function if either were to go bad? The alternator looks to be fairly new. I am going to have it tested Monday to be certain, but I am just trying to troubleshoot before I go.

Oh, more details... it's pretty much all stock. The smog pump has been removed and an open element K&N air filter was installed, but other than that, all stock.

Re: 83 Z28 Choke Light Question

Check for a full 12V at the choke element with the car running. I do this with the connector still plugged into the choke element so it's under normal load. If something has gone bad like the relay it won't have much (or any) voltage there. Alternator can be tested at most auto parts places or simply checked for voltage at the terminal on the back. If it's working properly it should be around 14V running, if it's bad it will read the same as battery voltage (and your battery will slowly die, obviously).

I am not sure if the choke wiring is tied in with the oil pressure sending unit in 83 but on some cars it was (i.e. a bad OPSU can cause a problem getting voltage to the choke). I'll defer to others on this subject since I never owned an 83 specifically.

Re: 83 Z28 Choke Light Question

Ok, thanks. I will check the choke connector tomorrow and will stop by Autozone to check the alt Monday when I bring it to the muffler shop to have the swinging exhaust checked out. Im just hoping that it is still wired properly and something hasnt been bypassed. I didnt really go over the car in great detail before purchasing it. I just knew it ran and drove great and most everything is tight and rattle free (minus the exhaust, which has a little free play, but no leaks)
