L05 Conversion help?

so i have a 87 camaro with the 305 4 bbl. i also have a L05 350 tbi sitting in my garage. I was wondering if i could use the fuel pump from the 305. also i heard that vortec heads were the best, so if i get those heads, would i pretty much just classify the motor as a pre-center bolt valve cover? Because they don't have much out there for the 1987-1995 motors. mainly doing this so i can convert to carb so its almost a complete dropin. and what parts can i use on the 350?

Re: L05 Conversion help?

In your case you can bolt all the existing stuff onto your L05. Carb intake manifold, computer controlled QJet carb, EGR system, computer controlled HEI distributor, exhaust, accessories, etc. You're lucky because only the 87 carb engine can you get away with swapping everything onto an 87-up TBI engine like the LO5. Count your blessing with that one! And yes, the computer controlled carb system will be able to run that mild 350 just fine. I would be willing to go so far as to bet that the smog police wouldn't be able to tell the difference- visually identical, probably pass the tailpipe sniffer no problem, but with another 45 cubes under the hood!

The stock mechanical fuel pump working is a crap shoot, however. Yes, the pump will bolt right up. But around 1990 the factory stopped putting the fuel pump lobe on the assembly line cams. Might have the lobe to drive the fuel pump, might not. Do you know what year L05 you have?

Re: L05 Conversion help?

well now i'm findng that i should use the vortec heads, and then i can pretty much use the parts for the vortec motors right? and just make it carb. and would i have any problems making it a 383 stroker with a roller cam?

Re: L05 Conversion help?

Vortec heads use a totally different intake. And they don't have exhaust crossover ports (EGR system won't work and stock bracketry like the throttle cable bracket may not bolt on because there is nowhere to bolt it to). They also require self-aligning rocker arms (which your 87 probably doesn't use, despite being centerbolt valve cover heads). Is that something you want to deal with vs. a true bolt-in?
