The procedure you outlined is correct, except for an '87 it should be a single tan wire to disconnect. Leave the transmission in park. 500 vs. 650 RPMs doesn't make that much difference, but don't let it get much higher than that (it probably won't).
When reconnected, the timing will be advanced from where you set it.

Interesting. Large cap distributor with the coil in the cap?
Well, if that's what it is, that's what you do.

That's a small cap distributor, which should be the single wire. At least, I've never heard of anything else.
Which connector did you disconnect?
Wouldn't be the first time the documentation/decals didn't catch up to the hardware.

Any chance you could get a better picture of the 4-wire connector you disconnected?
If it affected the timing, it must be the right one.

Re: Timing clarification LG4
I have an 87 that used to have an LG4. The 4 wire connector is the correct one to unplug. There is no single tan wire. To be sure, the coil is mounted directly in front of the dizzy and has a plug wire that goes from it to the center of the dizzy. The mark on the damper will not be visible if the 4 wire connector is connected, but when disconnected it will move down to the visible area. Setting timing to arouynd 5* advance worked best for me. There are 2 plugs at the base of the dizzy make sure to disconnect only the 4 wire (closer to the firewall) if you disconnect the other one, car will turn off.
