Why won't my car idle down?

I have an edelbrock 1406 and its been working great but since its gotten cold my cars base idle is all of a sudden about 1600rpm...the choke isn't hooked up. I tried moving the idle screw out and ended up with it all the way out but it still won't idle down. What gives?

It's on fast idle until the choke opens.

isn't 1500 kinda high? And my choke should be open already since it isn't hooked up. How can I tell if its closed?

Closed is the normal state for the choke, it won't open unless it's connected. Look at the position of the choke plate over the primaries.

Re: Why won't my car idle down?

Check your fast idle cam. It's on the side that the choke housing is on. While your car is running, open the throttle a little with one hand and manipulate the cam(plastic with "steps" on it) with the other. You should move it to where the adjustment screw isn't hitting any of the "steps". Your car should idle down. If this happens, you will have to adjust the screw so that the cam will easily be released when you blip the throttle in the morning. You also can back it all the way out so you won't have to worry about it at all, esp. if your not worried about the choke.

Go ahead and do that after you HOOK UP THE CHOKE.

Then the carb will work the way it was intended to work. And you can fiddle with little checks like the above after that.
