Edelbrock stubbornly runs rich

Not too sure what i'm doing wrong here.. i'm kind of a newbie to carbs.

The car is an '86 former TPI car converted to carb. It's got an airtex electric fuel pump for carbs, 5-9psi, 30gph with a holley regulator set to 5.5psi

The carb is an edelbrock 1407 - 750cfm, on a 355 w/ sportsman II's and a hot cam

no matter what I do the car runs rich, the plugs get black after 10 minutes. timing is set to 34 degrees total timing.. when i took the top off to check the floats there was this brown slimy stuff on the bottom.. that's getting cleaned out

idle adjustments dont really do much it just puffs out smoke.. any ideas?

Did you buy the carb new or used?

Re: Edelbrock stubbornly runs rich

Well... changing jets will change the air/fuel ratio. Although I admit, it sounds like you tried that already.
