Carb fast idle solonoid
OK maybe somebody can answer this. I have an '85 IROC L69 5-spd. When the car reaches a predetermined ground speed no matter what gear it is in the fast idle solonoid is activated. when slowing down in neutral you can see the tach hold at the high speed setting until that pre-set speed is reached and once speed goes below the tach drops to regular idle speed. For engine braking it would seem better if the throtle were completely closed. I don't want to desengage the solodoid because it is useful when using the A/C. Messing with the speed sensor would screw up the cruise control. Any ideas

What RPM is it holding it at? It should be only around 1,000 RPM with the A/C disengaged. That shouldn't really effect the engine braking. My '71 Trans Am has a solenoid that bumps it up to 1000 RPM all the time and I never have any problems with using the engine to slow the car down before using the brakes.
You would have to cut the ECM wires to the throttle kicker relay to stop it from activating the idle solenoid

Normal idle is around 850rpm, the solonoid kicks it up over 1,200. I would have to check it out on the road and that aint going to happen here for a while. It is enough of a difference to be a nuisance. Sometimes when cruising as lower speeds you lift off of the gas and nothing happens until you hit that spot where it bumps down. Not like my older F-bodys. Sort of like somebody else telling you how to drive. that's why I only like manual tranny cars, I shift up or down when I want .

Check the emissions label under the hood for the curb and solenoid activated speeds. The RPMs you're seeing seem on the high side. I want to say a manual trans car should have a curb idle around 600 RPM and 1000 RPM with the solenoid activaged but not the A/C compressor engaged.

If you get the RPMs down low enough you shouldn't notice it. With the engine RPMs around 1250 RPM its already making enough power to feel like the car is driving itself. When idle is around 1000 RPM there should be enough drag on the rest of the drivetrain that the RPMs should pull down to around 600-700 RPM and the car will move at a slow crawl.
