rather than a compression test, try running a leak test on it. Depending on how many miles are on it , it should average between 15 to 20 percent leak with standard style rings, and 12 to 18 percent with gapless rings. This will allow you to find valves not seating properly as well as worn rings or "blow by". You will need a very quiet place and a person to help you so you can hear where the air is going. It should come from the valve cover or crankcase. As far as reading plugs, you can't know what the plug really sees b/c it takes a picture of what it sees last. If you shut it off after idling, then you will be able to tell what your idle mixture is doing. If you shut it off at WOT (under load) and coasted to a stop and took one out, then you can tell what your main circuit is doing..good rule of thumb is caramel color brown and the first two threads wet. Water temp will also indicate a lean condition. I am sorry if I did not help you, but maybe you have something here that you can use.

if it was the rings it would not have gotten oil on the threads of my compression tester
