quadrajet install help

hey guys with the gas prices creeping higher i figured this was a good time to purchase and rebuild a quadrajet (non-cc) just for kicks. well the one i ended up with was a (7045203-2065). anyway i rebuilt it. blew out all the passages yada yada. well i put it on and once i chases a couple vacuum leaks. well i cant for the life of me get it to idle right it is really unstable and after a while idleing it will "load up" and slowly die especially in gear. primary throttle plates are not open that much at all maybe 5 or 6 turn of idle screw. also secondaries are fine too. idle mixture screws seem inneffective really also if i llok down the primaries at idle i cant see fuel dripping from the boosters (which would explain the idle mixture screw trouble i think) im thinking that my float level is to high. fuel pressure is 3-4 psi. vaccum is low as well 15" at 900 in park (used to be 17" w/ the holley). also i was spraying carb cleaner to find vacuum leaks and that made the car die as well (overly rich?) thanks.......

sounds rich to me- try adjusting the float levels, then play with the idle mixture

thanks that was my thought as well the boosters dripping along with fuel coming out of the accelerator pump shaft make me think that my float level is too high, so i will reset that and readjust everything ..... Stupid rain though here for the next couple days cause of the left overs form that hurricane (katrina?)

My car idles a little rough, unless the tranny is in gear.
If my vacuum guage is accurate; the idle reading on my car shows a rock-steady 25 inches at 750 r.p.m [in park].
I just noticed that you have a performance cam. Less overlap- less vacuum.

AHHHH

well i was able to tinker with it a little today basically what i foudnwas i reduced fuel pressure to 4-psi and my high float condition seemed to dissapear. but still here is my problem my idle is still kind of unstable and the warmer the car the more unstable it seems. fuel from nozzles is now gone at idle. but the idle mixture screws are out like 4 turns?? is that normal also if i put my hand over the choke horn (covering it like the choke was on) the idle improves ( speeds up smoothes out) and the slight hestitaion at tip in (this is all in park not moving ) is gone. this to me would indicate a lean condiation in the idle system but turning the screw out farther seems to have no effect??? do i need to inlarge the idle passage ..i have doug roe's book and have been consulting it but the help of experts on here ( damon is one name that i have seen in my searches) would be awesome thanks...

After reading chesterfield's favorite bedtime story, post your main jets and rods (#'s) for the rest of us to see.

Also, what year (roughly) is this off of?

bog means secondary air spring tension too loose. There is a great book on q-jets (don't know the name, but published by HP books) if you want to play with yours. Be prepared to spend some $$ on all the crap you will need to fine tune this pig. However, once you tune it in correctly, it will run like a raped ape!!
