leaking carb, cc-quadrajet

leaking carb, cc-quadrajet

rebuilt the carb few months ago, started leaking at the filter housing on the front of the carb so I tightened it up. It stopped for a while so when I pulled it off the threads were stripped, Oreilly's had a part that would tap into the part and fix but now leaks worse. is there anything else or is the carb now trash?
The way the guy at the parts store acted as if this is a common problem?

This happened to me very recently.
When you put in a new fuel filter (which you did right? with the spring, and the rubber end on the fuel filter pointing towards the carb?) did you put in a new white gasket on the 1 1/8" nut inlet? AND, remove the old gasket? I found out I hadn't removed the old one, and after fishing around with my pinky found 2 squished together, and removed one, and it stopped leaking.... Sounds odd, since it's so low pressure, but it worked... I think Five7kid told me that it's not the threads that seal, it's that gasket, so make sure it's there....

checked all that before the new part (from the help section at the auto parts store) even had a better gasket and still leaked,
tried to tighten it up and the leak started slowing then after tightening bit more it got worse.

Very very very common. That's why that "repair" part was hanging on that card.

I don't like to use those. That thing strips extra metal out of the fuel bowl, weakening it even further and making it impossible to ever repair correctly. I've seen them crack around there, from the force of jamming that thing in there.

They sometimes get that way from overtightening. But I think the more ordinary cause, is electrolysis from dissimilar metals - the malaysium or taiwanium or whatever it's cast out of, and the irridited steel screws. Typically when you come acros a carb that's like that, there's other threads that are also in bad shape; screw holes, the needle & seat threads, etc. I've had carbs that were so bad, every screw I took out was covered with white powder, which is oxidized casting metal. Then when I clean the carb up and tried to put it back together, every screw stripped. I've had Holleys to do that... ended up Heli-Coiling all the basplate screws and fuel bowl screws.

Unfortunately, if that's what's wrong with it, there's no way I know of to de-corrode all of those places. Once the metal is gone, it's gone.
