Front door speakers?

Do all camaros have front door speakers? I have an 86 sport coupe, my car is in the shop so I can't check for sure, but I'm ordering new speakers so they'll be here by the time my car is done. Anyways from the pictures I have, my car doesn't seem to have front door speakers.

Re: Front door speakers?

I don’t believe any thirdgens came with door speakers from the factory. The front speakers are up under the dash pad. You can see part of the grille on the dash in the picture you posted.

Yes there is, at least in manual crank cars. You can squeeze up to 6.5" speakers with grills down in the lower door corners without interfering with the window crank handles. You can fit speakers there in cars with power windows if you build the doors out a bit.

Re: Front door speakers?

Throwing out another option to door speakers, 5.5 or 6.5 components in dash. Tight fit and requires some mods to vents under dash, but keeps the stock look, other than tweeters in corners on top of dash, also gets rid of POS 4x6s which cannot handle any real power without popping the cones anyway. Can throw some real power to these components and have tweeter DB adjustability.

Couple pics to show some mods required. I am running 75 watts RMS to these, Kicker DS 6.5s and they sound great! Work under grills was performed to prevent speaker cones from hitting dash pad under full cone extension.

It can probably get louder, but unfortunately, without other modifications, it's not going to sound any better than the 4x6s. The big problem with the dash location is that there's no isolation of the rear soundwave, so your lower midrange is non-existent, which makes vocals sound very thin and shouty. I'm in the process now of trying to lay down some MLV on my dash to see how effectively it isolates the rear wave in hopes of getting some of my lower mids back.

Re: Front door speakers?

Could you use a speaker baffle behind the dash speaker to make it sound better?

Re: Front door speakers?

I feel the same way. To combat the loss of a box, I created an enclosure behind using Dynamat. It is not to any specific enclosure size, but does provide reflection from the rear. I left the paper backing on where I did not want it to stick to the under dash components, removing only where it would seal to dash.
