87 Trans Am double din install questions.
Hi All,
So I have read posts about face plate 3d printing and all kinds of attempts to replicate the finish on them until my eyes bled. My question is has anyone ever sorted out the Firebird double din install yet.
Is it possible to just modify the original plate or a reproduction or used face plate for double din head units? I have manual AC and heater controls.
I have seen double dins in a few cars at the TA Nationals in Dayton but I never inquired about their install since I had a dependable Kenwood single din installed with a Clarion EQ below it.
The Kenwood CD player just died so now I'm interested in a double din install.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have one that was modified by Double Din...he is out of business however. It was an original that he modified and yes iIt can be done. I did it for my 199 Jeep TJ bezel. You have to cut the plastic on top and bottom to match the height of the 2 DIN. The 1.5 DIN GM is wider than a 2 DIN, so you have to build the sides. Best is use fiberglass repair kit. Using the mesh, glass the sides an build up with resin. Sand it down nice and smooth and paint it whatever color you want with plastic paint spray. Go with a satin or flat black.
I too would like to get a 3d printed one with the factory finish some day.
Wiring is easy. Get a GM radio harness that matched the one in the car. Mate it to the new 2 DIN radio harness. I have done this on 3 cars, my Bird, my TJ and my 2005 Grand Am. You can get the harness on eBay cheap from several sellers.

Re: 87 Trans Am double din install questions.
Hawkeye 1980,
Thanks for The info. I have been searching the net and found a 3D printed one for Firebird for sale on EBay. Unfortunately it doesn't have the factory finish, it is textured like the Camaro one.
I am thinking about just trimming a reproduction of the factory style and just cutting a filler out of black sheet plastic to fit behind the plate to fill in the sides. I did this with my single din with an EQ mounted under it. I am only thinking of going double din because my single din Kenwood CD player started messing up.

I love the double din. I have a backup camera on a 32 year old car. I can load up my favorite music on a memory card, plus so many options. Show us what you wind up with!

Re: 87 Trans Am double din install questions.
I've only had my firebird for 2 yrs and the previous owner was less than honest about why the stock stereo with cassete player didn't work. It is a 1988 firebird Formula 350 with stock WS6 wheels, and 3.42 posi. The stereo bezel is in good shape so I am looking for a stereo that needs no work to install. The original had the cassette, and everything that was stock at the time. Just want a stock stereo with CD if possible. Thanks, Clay.
