Sail Panel Subs/Midbass help!

Removed my back well subs many years ago after finding them more annoying then anything else,a guys gotta put the golf clubs somewhere and its not going on the leather plus i use the car to travel as its amazing on the highway. However it left a sorry gap in bass in the car. Fiddled with the idea of putting one in the spare tire well but thats where the amp resides for the rest of the speakers and seemed like it would induce rattles. Not caring much until now, i was looking around the board for ideas and seeing guys putting 8's in there, which just seems like too much right behind your head. Not being a audio guy i stumbled onto 6.5/6.75 woofers like the JL Audio 6W3v3-4. Was looking for input on if these would maybe fill the need and not over whelm if properly setup. Was also hoping for a lil back fill sound and if i could still have room to sneak a small coaxial speaker back there. I currently just have JL 6x9's in the sail and JL TR650's in DJSexay kickpanels.(some of you may remember those). All thoughts and insight welcome.

If it's not a T-top car might I suggest putting a sub box on top of the hump? I'm also looking for midbass out of my system, and that's including a sub.

Dont really want anything visible. I love the clean factory fresh look. This GTA still has under 60K miles on it. Its not all factory but its always tasteful.

Ah, I see. I don't see why subs that size wouldn't work provided they get the required wattage. Should still keep your sound stage at the front, without leaving a huge gap in crossover points.

Cone space is king for bass. 8' in the sail is NOT too much. I ran 8's with my old setup and sounded great. Add a bit of deadener behind the sub...trust me.

6x9's will give bit more bass as well.

Your choice

Re: Sail Panel Subs/Midbass help!

I have shallow mount pioneer10" subs behind the sail panels...lots of sound deadener/filler is required if you go this route.

Re: Sail Panel Subs/Midbass help!

I've heard several F-bodys using 8" subs in the sail panels as their main source of bass and the results were quite good. No, it wasn't booming, crazy bass like with a couple of 12's in the well, but not everyone wants that. It was good, tight bass with more than enough bump to it and much more than I'd ever heard out of 6x9's. I think the key is to get good 8's that can handle the power and a amp that can supply enough clean power. There's nothing wrong with over-amping speakers either, its easier to blow subs by pushing a smaller amp too hard to the point of clipping than it is to over power them with a big amp!
