I've been considering this for a while, but I'm not ready to drop the $ on a good dd head unit, how goofy do you guys think it would look if I used the bezel with the current single din head unit? Or I might just go see what the bezels are going for on ebay & pick one up to be modded, idk.

Moot point anyway, thinking about it my existing bezel has a small crack around one screw & I can get a brand new gm replacement for $20 shipped, so put me down. I'll pick up a new one to get modded & run the old one until I'm ready to swap head units.

the double din IS narrower than the 1.5.thats why we can't just trim the hole bigger.im STILL waiting to see a good picture of a modded cover.the last one i saw looked like someone had just covered it with vinyl.

USPS delivered the one I'm going to have modded today, so I'm good to go whenever we get a 10th person.

Re: Camaro Owners who want double din, possible group buy on the DoubleD units
Just wanted to let you all know that I got mine.
I haven't been able to compare side by side with the consul in my car as the car is currently getting painted and is all taped up. Not to say that I've forgotten what the factory finish looks like, I just can't take a pic right yet for all to see.
However the description that I put on here a while back is incorrect, the finish is some kind of lightly textured spray paint. The factory finish is gone.
It's also definitely hand made, the lines/edges aren't perfectly straight like you would find from a factory piece which comes from a mold.
Don't get me wrong, it's still really nice and I couldn't make one even in the same ball park, but if your looking for the exact factory piece with a different radio opening...... well they don't exist...... lol
Here's a bad example: http://www.krylon.ca/ca/eng/products...tured_shimmer/ look at the white one and just picture it as all black....

The stock screws aren't Phillips or allens, they're torque screws (they have a star shaped opening).

I think the second pic captures the finish pretty well. Let me know if you want more.
The first pic is to show why I say it's hand made, you'll notice that the top edge is not perfectly straight, while there may be a light shadow behind it, the dark edge is the actual physical edge of the part. You'll also notice the bottom right hand corner of the face of the bezel, it has a indentation on it (it's not flat), like someone was holding it there while it was curing or something.
Once again, not trying to discourage anyone, just want to show you in close detail what to expect. It's not 100% perfect, but it's 100 times better then anything I could have made.

Once you get it installed, could you take some more pictures. I want to see how the finish compares to the console and dash. If it's really noticeable I will need to look for an alternative.

Re: Camaro Owners who want double din, possible group buy on the DoubleD units
Hey guys, I'm new to third gen but have had lots of exsperience with audio and I do now that 3rd gen camaros are one of the hardest to modify to double din without having to cut your heating ducts in the consel to get the deck to fit. I had to raise my heater controls by a 1/2 inch to get the deck to sit properly and I'm one for somewhat of a stock look but had to suffer a bit. the deck looks a little tilted in the pics so I'm wondering if this plate comes with all the brackets to mount or if it's simply the plate.

After seeing the final products from them, I think I'm out. The edges just don't look straight, and the blemishes in the finish bug me.
I'm going to try and build my own later on in the year.

If I had fab skills I would do like Dezined did & relocate the HVAC controls to the ashtray (https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/car-...t-mount-w.html) and then make a custom bezel with the unit mounted right in the middle.

Re: Camaro Owners who want double din, possible group buy on the DoubleD units
it does not come with brackets. it comes with some roofing/fencing brackets (yes, I saw the EXACT same ones at the home depot) that you have to drill yourself. The problem, is that because of bumps in the supplied brackets, they do not make for a clean install.
I had to pay $125 for custom brackets at a sheet metal shop that did not come out perfectly.

Re: Camaro Owners who want double din, possible group buy on the DoubleD units
I have done my own DD mod using my 3d printer. Simple brackets fit the HU right in there with just 3 cuts to the face plate with a dremel and done. Now I am redesign a complete faceplate replacement that wraps around the center console better including the AC controls and with a faceplate location for adding IROC logo and future switched/LED back lighting.
I have had a few emails for the brackets already. And I have seen what I think are ridiculous prices $100 for just a face plate. is there any interest for a cheap alt? What $ is you think is sweet spot?
This pic has the cut face plate and not bolted down yet. I made side plates on the left and right of the HU to cover up the metal that still shows. But I will take a step further now that I know the concept works. Should be 100% plug and play no cutting of anything just new brackets, and face plate (will be assembled into 3-4 pieces bolted together.)

Look at my pics from start to finish. It's solid and the texture matches perfect. I'd be will to do them for 100 if people provide the plate

Re: Camaro Owners who want double din, possible group buy on the DoubleD units
LOL I was just showing the brackets which fit plug and play and bolt up easily. The Face plate is just the stock Faceplate with dremel cut to fit. No I have uploaded my face plate brackets that bezel the until now. I have it installed but I am going to go to the next step and redesign a full bezel that replaces the stock one. I will probably have it slightly wrap around over the consoles edges so it looks flush and have a more custom look on the HVAC control side too
I am drawing this weekend and will print and post what I can soon.
I can easily print and ship some sturdy brackets all day long for TGO that is half the battle

Finished product. Pm me if you don't have the skill, time or tools to do your own. Building an engine is easy too...if you know what you're doing, have the time and the tools.

Calm down guys, your fighting over a plastic bezel.. If it makes either of you feel better, you both did decent jobs and wouldn't be ashamed to have either in my car. Instead of arguing you could be giving oneanother pointers and advice to improve design. Isn't that the object of this site?

I cleaned up the thread a little but I'd like to leave it open since it has some of the best examples/pictures of Double Din Camaro radio installs I've seen.

There is no particular method that works best. My only advice is to have a steady hand and take your time when plastic welding. I thought the pictures were plenty. Cut, fit, bond, sand, prime, texture. The only way to get more detailed is to do it for ya and that ain't free.
